A Florida doctor accused of making one of the most horrifying surgical mistakes in recent memory says he is “forever traumatized” after accidentally removing a patient’s liver instead of his spleen during a botched operation that ended in tragedy.
Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky broke his silence in a deposition obtained by NBC, admitting the deadly operating room disaster still haunts him every single day.
“That was an incredibly unfortunate event that I regret deeply,” Shaknovsky said during the emotional testimony. “I’m forever traumatized by it and hurt by it.”
The nightmare unfolded in August 2024 when 70-year-old William Bryan was rushed into surgery after suffering severe internal bleeding. According to reports, doctors believed Bryan’s spleen was the source of the problem and Shaknovsky moved quickly to remove it in an effort to save his life.
But during the chaotic procedure, prosecutors say the surgeon made a catastrophic mistake — removing Bryan’s liver instead.
Bryan reportedly began bleeding heavily on the operating table before his heart stopped. The horrifying error ultimately proved fatal.
“I can’t explain to you what it’s like for a surgeon to lose a patient on a table,” Shaknovsky said in the deposition. “How demoralizing it is and how devastating it is.”
The doctor added that he thinks about the tragedy “every single day” and said the emotional toll has been overwhelming.
Still, the shocking mistake has sparked outrage and disbelief, with critics questioning how such a devastating error could happen inside an operating room.
Shaknovsky is now facing manslaughter charges tied to Bryan’s death. If convicted, the Florida surgeon could spend up to 15 years behind bars.
The bizarre case has continued to attract national attention as more details emerge about the fatal surgery and the events leading up to Bryan’s death.
