Shockwaves hit the football world Monday as Rod Martin, the hard-hitting linebacker who helped define the Raiders’ glory years, has died at 72 — and fans are reeling.
The Las Vegas Raiders confirmed the heartbreaking news, calling Martin a “beloved member of the Raiders Family” as tributes poured in across social media. No cause of death has been revealed.
“A favorite of Raiders fans everywhere,” the team said, sending condolences to his family as Raider Nation mourns one of its all-time greats.
Martin wasn’t just another player — he was a defensive force who helped power the then-Oakland Raiders to two Super Bowl titles and etched his name into NFL history. Drafted in the 12th round out of University of Southern California in 1977, he went on to spend his entire 12-year career with the franchise, racking up 165 games and 147 starts.
But his legacy was sealed on the biggest stage.
In Super Bowl XV, Martin delivered one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen, picking off three passes in a dominant win over the Philadelphia Eagles — a record that still stands today. He struck again in Super Bowl XVIII, helping dismantle Washington in a blowout victory to secure his second championship ring.
A two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro — including first-team honors in 1984 — Martin was known for his instincts, toughness, and ability to change games in an instant. Over his career, he turned defense into offense, scoring six total touchdowns off interceptions and fumble recoveries.
Off the field, his story was just as powerful. Born in West Virginia to a coal miner, Martin moved to Los Angeles as a kid, attended Alexander Hamilton High School alongside future legend Warren Moon, and eventually made his mark at USC before catching the eye of iconic coach John Madden.
After hanging up his cleats, Martin returned to USC, quietly building a second career in tech and mentoring the next generation.
Now, fans are remembering not just the player — but the man.
“I met him randomly at Walmart… we talked for 20 minutes about the good old Raiders. He was super cool,” one fan wrote.
“Such a gracious man… RIP legend,” another shared.
Others called him “one of the greatest to ever do it” and “a true Raider through and through.”
From Super Bowl heroics to humble moments with fans, Rod Martin leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond the field — and one that Raider Nation won’t soon forget.
