‘Doogie Howser, M.D.’, ‘General Hospital’ Actor Dies at 73

A longtime TV favorite who popped up in some of America’s most beloved shows has died after a quiet, heartbreaking fight behind the scenes.

Rif Hutton, a prolific character actor known for roles on Doogie Howser, M.D., General Hospital, and JAG, passed away Saturday, April 18, at his home in Pasadena. He was 73. According to family and close friends, Hutton had been battling the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma for about a year before his death.

While he may not have always been front and center, Hutton’s face was instantly recognizable to generations of viewers. Over a career spanning decades, he racked up nearly 200 TV credits — appearing in everything from classic sitcoms like The Jeffersons, Full House, and Married…With Children to modern hits like American Horror Story, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Grace and Frankie.

He also had more extended runs that cemented his place in TV history, including Tribes in the early ’90s, multiple seasons of Doogie Howser, M.D., and a later-career return to the spotlight with 32 episodes of General Hospital in 2021 and 2022.

Off-screen, those who knew him say Hutton was just as unforgettable.

“A remarkable human being has left this earthly plane,” his friend and fellow voice actor Steve Apostolina shared in an emotional tribute. “To say that Rif Hutton was one of a kind is a gross understatement.”

Apostolina described Hutton as the ultimate professional — always the most prepared, always the first to arrive, and someone who set the bar high in the voiceover world.

Even as his health declined, Hutton didn’t step away quietly. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in March 2025, he became an advocate — even participating in the National Brain Tumor Society’s Southern California walk and urging others to support research and patients battling the disease.

“There continues to be meaningful advancements in the fight,” he wrote at the time. “And that fight needs all of us.”

Hutton also stood in solidarity with fellow actors during the SAG strike, showing up regularly on picket lines at Warner Bros., proving his dedication to the industry never wavered.

In addition to television, Hutton appeared in films like the 2022 crime comedy Rattled! and lent his voice to Ice Age: Collision Course.

He is survived by his wife, voice actor Bridget Hoffman, and their son, Wolfy.

For many fans, he was one of those actors you saw everywhere — and now, his sudden loss is hitting a little harder as Hollywood remembers one of its most dependable and quietly impactful talents.
