Meghan Markle reportedly wanted to reveal the disturbing reason behind her estrangement from her father years ago, but a royal protection officer allegedly urged her to remain silent. Now, British police are facing an independent investigation over their handling of serious allegations that were never passed to authorities overseas.
The controversy centers on a letter containing troubling claims about Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, that was brought to the attention of London’s Metropolitan Police years before a separate criminal investigation emerged in the Philippines.
According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex wanted to publicly explain why she had cut ties with her father but was advised against speaking out by a member of the Metropolitan Police’s royal protection unit.
An officer allegedly told her, “Leave it with us, we’ll investigate it.”
Meghan reportedly followed that advice, believing authorities were handling the matter. But years later, police have acknowledged that the allegations were never forwarded to other law enforcement agencies.
The revelations have raised uncomfortable questions about what happened behind the scenes and whether Meghan was discouraged from speaking publicly while serious allegations went unaddressed.
Meghan has said she became aware of a letter containing disturbing allegations in 2018 and was assured the claims were being investigated. The Metropolitan Police, however, says its records show the force received the correspondence in January 2019.
Rather than alerting overseas investigators, Scotland Yard passed the information to the office of Meghan and Prince Harry.
The scandal resurfaced in October when Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to have discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among belongings at their father’s former residence in the Philippines.
Authorities in the Philippines subsequently launched an investigation and obtained a warrant to examine electronic devices connected to the allegations.
Thomas Markle Sr. has strongly denied possessing illegal material or engaging in abuse, dismissing the accusations as “sick lies.” The allegations remain unproven.
As scrutiny intensified, the Metropolitan Police conducted an internal review and referred its handling of the 2019 letter to Britain’s Independent Office for Police Conduct.
On October 30, the watchdog confirmed it would launch an independent investigation into why the allegations were not shared with appropriate authorities abroad.
An IOPC spokesperson said an investigation was necessary into the force’s “failure to pass on allegations of serious offending” to relevant overseas agencies.
Adding to the controversy, reports indicate that police could not locate their original copy of the warning letter and had to obtain another copy from Meghan herself.
The watchdog also identified a separate concern involving a possible data breach after information was shared with a third party. That issue was returned to the Metropolitan Police to address through its own procedures.
Although the independent investigation is now underway, authorities have not confirmed that any officer is being investigated specifically for attempting to silence Meghan. The allegation that she was discouraged from speaking publicly remains a separate, unverified account.
Meghan, meanwhile, has spoken publicly about the emotional toll of the allegations and defended her decision to keep her father away from her two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
In a statement issued after the allegations resurfaced, she said her decision to maintain that distance was driven by a desire to protect her children.
The Metropolitan Police has also announced plans to forward the historical allegations to relevant overseas law enforcement agencies, years after receiving the original warning.
For Meghan, the controversy has reopened one of the most painful chapters of her family history. For Scotland Yard, it has created a potentially damaging reckoning over why serious allegations were not passed along when officers first learned of them.

Meghan stated that her decision to keep her distance was driven by a desire to protect her children from her father, whom she accuses of pedophilia. But how will she protect her children from her own past involving yacht-based escort services, Soho House, and Jeffrey Epstein?
