Grandstand Collapses Beneath Hundreds at Sold-Out Music Festival (Video)

A packed music festival turned into a terrifying scene when a grandstand suddenly collapsed beneath concertgoers, sending spectators tumbling and leaving at least 22 people injured, including four who were rushed to the hospital.

The frightening incident unfolded around 2:50 p.m. Sunday, November 1, during the sold-out Red Hot Summer Tour at Coolangatta Beach on Australia’s Gold Coast. Australian rock band Boom Crash Opera was performing when a section of the temporary seating structure unexpectedly buckled, sending chairs and spectators crashing downward.

Witnesses described hearing a tremendous crash before realizing the grandstand was collapsing. Off-duty nurse Claire Borg, who was nearby, recalled seeing people bouncing as the seats gave way, while fellow nurse Alicia Glohe described the structure folding like a wave.

The two nurses immediately rushed to help injured concertgoers, including a woman whose ankle had become trapped beneath the collapsed platform. Other spectators suffered cuts, bruises and injuries to their legs and backs as emergency crews descended on the scene.

According to Queensland Police, 22 people required medical treatment, with four taken to the hospital. The hospitalized patients, two men and two women, reportedly suffered injuries involving a collarbone, an ankle and their backs.

Queensland Ambulance Service supervisor Gavin Fuller said most victims escaped with relatively minor injuries, calling it fortunate that the collapse did not result in more serious consequences.

The band immediately stopped performing and called for medical assistance, bringing the afternoon’s festivities to an abrupt halt. The concert eventually resumed about an hour later, with the damaged seating area closed.

But perhaps the most alarming revelation came from organizers, who told the stunned crowd that the grandstand had been inspected and approved by an engineer just one day before it collapsed.

An organizer who witnessed the incident said his heart sank as he watched the structure give way and promised a thorough investigation into what went wrong.

Promoter Face to Face Touring confirmed that affected spectators would receive full refunds, while Queensland Police, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the City of Gold Coast launched inquiries into the collapse.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has also called for a review of the circumstances, raising questions about the safety inspections conducted before large public events.

The festival featured several popular Australian acts, including Men at Work, Australian Crawl, Eskimo Joe and Birds of Tokyo.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. However, the unexpected collapse of a grandstand that organizers said had been cleared by an engineer has left investigators facing a troubling question: How could a structure approved just 24 hours earlier suddenly give way beneath hundreds of concertgoers?

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the collapse.
