A terrifying scene unfolded inside a busy Indiana Walmart when a 25-year-old employee was shot and killed during her morning shift, leaving customers and coworkers caught in the aftermath of a deadly confrontation.
The shooting erupted shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, November 2, at the Walmart Supercenter in Hammond, Indiana, just across the state line from Chicago. Police say the victim had been speaking with a young man inside the store when their conversation escalated into an argument and then a physical altercation.
Investigators allege the man, believed to be approximately 18 years old, pulled out a firearm and shot the woman multiple times. She died at the scene.
But what happened next added another disturbing twist to the tragedy.
Instead of fleeing, the suspected gunman reportedly walked several aisles away, placed his weapon on the floor and sat down to wait for police.
Hammond Police Capt. Steve Kellogg told CBS Chicago that an off-duty police officer working security at the store detained the suspect before responding officers arrived.
Authorities received the initial report at approximately 9:09 a.m., triggering a major police response. Emergency crews and investigators descended on the Walmart at 1100 Fifth Avenue, where stunned employees and shoppers were left dealing with the aftermath.
Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other before the deadly encounter, although the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear.
Kellogg said the two had been talking for some time before the situation turned violent, suggesting the shooting followed a prolonged confrontation rather than a random attack.
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. described the incident as domestic-related, but investigators have not publicly established a motive or explained what sparked the argument.
Employees and customers were inside the store when the shooting occurred. Fortunately, authorities reported no additional injuries.
The victim’s identity had not been publicly released as of Tuesday, and police had not announced specific criminal charges against the suspect. He remained in custody as detectives continued investigating.
Outside the store, multiple police vehicles and a Lake County coroner’s vehicle were seen as investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the killing.
Walmart closed the location for the remainder of Monday and said it was cooperating with the investigation.
“We’re heartbroken by what’s happened at our Hammond, IN store,” a company spokesperson said, adding that Walmart was working closely with authorities.
The retailer also said it was providing mental health resources to employees affected by the tragedy.
Despite the violence, investigators emphasized that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and said there was no continuing threat to the surrounding community.
The killing has left a young woman’s family, friends and coworkers mourning a life lost during what should have been an ordinary day at work.
For investigators, major questions remain, including what triggered the confrontation, the precise relationship between the victim and suspect, and what charges may ultimately be filed.
The Hammond Police Department said its investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
