A California high school football player’s Halloween celebration turned into a nightmare when gunfire erupted near a crowded house party, leaving the 16-year-old dead and his devastated family searching for answers.
William Francisco Aviles, a student and football player at North High School in Bakersfield, was fatally shot early Saturday, October 31, after attending a Halloween gathering with friends.
Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 3:35 a.m. in the 3500 block of South Half Moon Drive discovered the teenager suffering from severe injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
According to a fundraising page organized to support his grieving family, a gunman opened fire into a crowd of teenagers. Police have not publicly confirmed the precise circumstances of the shooting or identified a motive.
Aviles, who played tight end and defensive line for North High School, was remembered as an ambitious young athlete with big dreams and an unforgettable personality.
His school’s football program shared an emotional tribute, saying his life, memory and impact would never be forgotten.
“To anyone who knew him, William was a force of nature,” his family’s fundraiser stated, describing a teenager whose larger-than-life personality could light up a room.
Behind that confident exterior was a devoted son and older brother who grew up in a hardworking household with his parents and three younger sisters.
Despite his family’s financial struggles, Aviles was determined to build a successful future. He dreamed of earning enough money to enjoy the finer things in life while remaining fiercely protective of the family he loved.
His sudden death has left his parents and three sisters facing an unimaginable loss, with supporters raising money to help cover funeral expenses and provide financial assistance.
Meanwhile, investigators are urgently searching for answers and believe footage recorded by partygoers could help identify whoever was responsible.
The Bakersfield Police Department revealed that numerous witnesses either saw or recorded the shooting, with some videos already circulating on social media. Detectives are now asking anyone who captured footage to submit it directly to investigators.
As of Tuesday, November 3, authorities had not publicly announced an arrest or identified a suspect in Aviles’ killing.
The tragedy comes just over two months after another Bakersfield teenager, 17-year-old Levi Brown, was fatally shot during a high school football game at Independence High School on August 21. A 15-year-old suspect was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in that case. Police have not indicated that the two shootings are connected.
For the Aviles family, the focus remains on remembering a promising young athlete whose life ended far too soon.
Detective Matthew Guerra is asking anyone with information about the Halloween shooting to call 661-326-3872. Tips can also be provided to the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.
