Actor Max Ehrich has landed in legal trouble again after police say they found him “dazed” and unsteady near a large nitrous oxide canister at a Florida shopping center.

The 35-year-old actor, who was once engaged to singer Demi Lovato, was arrested on Aug. 25 and charged with possession of nitrous oxide.

According to an arrest affidavit, the bizarre encounter began after Ehrich allegedly called 911 and then hung up.

When officers arrived at the shopping center, they reportedly found Ehrich in some bushes near a plastic bag. Inside was a large nitrous oxide container labeled “Max Cream Charger.”

Police said Ehrich appeared “dazed” and had trouble keeping his balance while standing.

Ehrich allegedly told officers he wanted to get medication from his parents’ home but did not feel comfortable going there. He also told police he had no plans to harm himself.

His parents, however, reportedly told officers they believed their son had developed an addiction to nitrous oxide.

Police did not claim they personally saw Ehrich inhale or use the gas. However, investigators noted that a nozzle was attached to the canister, which they said suggested it may have been used before officers arrived.

Ehrich later complained that he did not feel well and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being transported to jail.

The arrest comes less than a year after Ehrich faced another legal problem involving his family.

In November 2025, he was arrested over allegations of domestic violence involving a family member. He was later released after posting $1,000 bond.

Ehrich was also reportedly placed on a psychiatric hold during another incident after fans became concerned about his behavior on social media. He was later taken to a mental health facility in southeast Florida.

News of his latest arrest quickly sparked discussion online, especially because of his highly publicized past relationship with Lovato.

Ehrich and Lovato became engaged in 2020, but the relationship ended later that same year. Some fans criticized people for continuing to connect the actor’s troubles to Lovato, pointing out that the pair have not been together for years.

Ehrich is best known for playing Fenmore Baldwin on “The Young and the Restless.” He has also appeared in “High School Musical 3” and other television and film projects.

His latest case is now adding another troubling chapter to what has become a turbulent stretch for the former soap star.
