Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing fresh scrutiny after sharing a family video that appeared to reveal clues about where they are living in England — despite years of public battles over security and privacy.
Royal commentators are now questioning whether the move was simply careless or part of a broader effort to strengthen Harry’s case for taxpayer-funded protection.
Meghan posted the Instagram video Sunday, showing herself, Harry and their children, Archie and Lilibet, enjoying time in the English countryside. The footage reportedly included recognizable features such as a tree-lined path, a pond and a bridge near the Sussexes’ new home in the Cotswolds.
That immediately raised eyebrows because Harry and Meghan have repeatedly spoken about threats to their safety and concerns over their family’s privacy.
Royal expert Tom Sykes called the decision “almost unbelievably stupid” during The Royalist podcast, arguing that the couple should have known people could potentially use the footage to identify their location.
“I think it’s a bit ridiculous to say, oh, they just didn’t realize that anyone was gonna, like, geolocate this lake and this bridge and this farm track,” Sykes said.
The controversy grew even more heated one day later when it was revealed that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, had agreed to review the Sussexes’ security arrangements and conduct a new risk assessment.
That timing prompted Sykes to float a far more provocative theory.
“It does seem like they are creating security risks deliberately to bolster the argument that they want armed security,” he said.
Daily Mail editor-at-large Alison Boshoff also questioned how Harry could have allowed so many location clues to appear publicly.
Boshoff said Harry would have been repeatedly warned during his years as a senior working royal never to reveal information that could make him or his family easier to locate.
“Either he’s really thick and has forgotten getting that advice, or he remembers getting that advice perfectly well,” Boshoff said, suggesting the security controversy could be part of the couple’s larger strategy.
Harry has spent years trying to regain the automatic police protection he lost after he and Meghan stepped away from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California.
The Duke of Sussex has argued that the reduced protection leaves his family vulnerable when they are in Britain. His legal challenges over the decision have repeatedly failed.
The couple recently returned to England after leaving California, placing even more attention on their security situation.
Meghan’s video also came shortly after Harry’s office said the couple had been “surprised” by a letter sent on behalf of King Charles reminding senior officials that Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals.
The letter reportedly described their status as being similar to “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
Sykes said Harry has remained confident for years that his security arrangements would eventually improve, despite repeated resistance from officials responsible for deciding who receives taxpayer-funded protection.
Now, with the Sussexes back in Britain and their security situation under review once again, Meghan’s seemingly innocent family video has sparked a much bigger question.
Was it simply a careless social media post — or did Harry and Meghan know exactly what they were doing?
The Sussexes did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
