Whoopi Goldberg has sparked a fierce online debate after joking about the eye-popping paycheck she receives for sitting at The View’s famous table.

The 70-year-old TV veteran opened up about her salary during an appearance on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast — and her comments quickly divided fans and critics.

When host Keke Palmer told Goldberg she could only imagine how large her paycheck must be, the longtime View moderator suggested the real number would leave her stunned.

“Trust me. You can’t. You would be shocked,” Goldberg said. “As soon as they’d show you that check, you’d be like, ‘What the…?’”

Goldberg did not reveal an exact figure, but she is widely rumored to earn several million dollars a year from the ABC daytime show.

The Sister Act star joined The View in 2007 and has remained on the program for more than 18 seasons. She is now the show’s second-longest-serving co-host, behind Joy Behar, who has appeared on the panel for more than 26 seasons.

Goldberg said the late Barbara Walters personally recruited her after a seat opened up on the show.

“Barbara offered me a job,” Goldberg recalled. “She said, ‘We just lost one of the people on the show, would you consider coming over?’”

At the time, Goldberg was hosting a radio program and immediately accepted the opportunity.

“She brought me over, and it’s like I’ve been crazy-glued to that chair,” she joked.

Despite raising eyebrows with her paycheck remarks, Goldberg insisted she remains grateful to have steady work in an unpredictable industry.

“I look around every day before I leave my house, and I see my family, and I see pictures of folks, and I think, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s good to have a job,’” she said.

Goldberg added that she enjoys discussing current events, interacting with people and speaking openly about her beliefs.

“A lot of people don’t have jobs right now, so I’m lucky,” she said. “I like to talk. I like talking about stuff. I like people. And I’m okay with what I think I believe, and I don’t mind doing that.”

She also pushed back against the widespread belief that everyone in Hollywood is collecting enormous salaries.

“The truth of the matter is, very few of us are actually making the kind of money you’re reading about,” Goldberg said.

Still, once the podcast clip began spreading online, some viewers accused the Oscar winner of sounding out of touch while ordinary Americans struggle with rising household expenses.

“Get a grip, Whoopi. People are struggling to pay for gas and groceries,” one critic wrote on X.

Another complained, “I hate when millionaires who make millions per year downplay it.”

A third person branded Goldberg’s comments “so tone deaf.”

But Goldberg’s supporters quickly came to her defense, arguing that the entertainment icon has earned her success after decades in show business.

“Black woman working her entire life and achieving success? Good for Whoopi. She deserves every penny,” one fan wrote.

Another supporter pointed to the long history of unequal opportunities and pay disparities facing Black women in America.

A third fan celebrated Goldberg’s financial success with a simple message: “The bag is secured, we love to see it.”

Goldberg is one of the relatively few entertainers to achieve EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony during her decades-long career.

Whether viewers found her comments funny or tone-deaf, one thing appears certain: Whoopi’s seat at The View table is paying very well.
