A terrifying night at a Mexican fair nearly turned deadly when a cable car from an amusement ride suddenly broke loose and crashed to the ground, narrowly missing people standing below.

The frightening incident happened Friday night at a fair in Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, during only the second day of the event. Video recorded by a stunned attendee showed the cable car swaying strangely as it moved along the ride, appearing unstable moments before disaster struck.

Seconds later, the cabin suddenly detached from the structure and dropped about 20 feet, slamming down near another attraction as fairgoers scrambled nearby.

The most chilling part of the footage showed people standing underneath the ride just moments before the cable car came crashing down. Somehow, no one was hit.

Officials later confirmed there were no passengers inside the cabin when it fell, and no injuries were reported among visitors.

The ride was part of a traveling amusement park operated by Espectaculos Garcia, one of Mexico’s largest fairground ride providers. The attraction was reportedly popular with children and families attending the fair, making the close call even more alarming.

After the collapse, the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection in Ciudad del Carmen stepped in and shut down the attraction. Authorities placed an official closure seal on the ride while a full safety inspection was launched.

Workers were later seen retrieving the fallen cabin, while the damaged structure was covered with a tarp. Despite the frightening accident, the rest of the fair reportedly continued operating.

The incident has sparked growing outrage in the community, especially after local media reported the fair had officially opened Thursday even though the company responsible for the rides was allegedly still carrying out installation and assembly work hours after the opening ceremony.

As video of the collapse spread online, local civic groups and concerned fairgoers demanded that officials release the mandatory Mechanical Structural Safety Dictum, the document meant to show whether the ride had been properly inspected and cleared for use.

Many are now questioning how a family-friendly attraction could have been allowed to operate if installation work was still underway.

Authorities have not yet revealed what caused the cable car to break free.

For now, the terrifying footage has left many viewers shaken — and wondering how close the fair came to a tragedy.
