An 11-year-old Scout’s summer camp adventure ended in tragedy after a tree suddenly fell on him while he was walking through a wooded trail at a Michigan camp, authorities said.

The heartbreaking incident happened Thursday at Owasippe Scout Reservation in western Michigan, a long-running Scouting America summer camp located in Muskegon County.

According to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was walking through a forest trail at the camp when a tree came down and struck him.

The child, who was from River Forest, Illinois, suffered multiple injuries and died as a result, officials said.

Deputies said they were notified of the incident at 5:08 p.m. Thursday and responded to the camp along with the Blue Lake Fire Department, White Lake Ambulance and Muskegon County Victim Services.

The boy’s name has not been publicly released.

Scouting America said the organization was devastated by the young camper’s death.

“We are heartbroken by the death of our Scout at Owasippe Scout Reservation,” Scouting America said in a statement to ABC News. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the Scout’s family, friends, fellow Scouts and leaders during this incredibly difficult time.”

The organization also said it is fully cooperating with authorities as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation and that additional updates may be released later.

Owasippe Scout Reservation has been used for generations as a summer destination for Scouts, offering outdoor activities, camping, hiking and wilderness programs. But what should have been a memorable trip for one young boy and his fellow Scouts turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

The death has left the Scouting community grieving as the boy’s family, friends and troop members cope with the sudden loss of a child during what was supposed to be a safe outdoor experience.
