A massive crash involving an MTA bus, multiple vehicles and a FedEx Office building turned a busy Maryland roadway into what one fire official described as a “war scene.”

The crash happened Wednesday evening in Pikesville, Maryland, in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road. Baltimore County officials said the first call came in shortly before 6 p.m., and emergency crews arrived to find a sprawling scene that stretched across several streets.

The Maryland Transit Administration bus had crashed into a commercial building occupied by FedEx, while numerous civilian vehicles were also involved in the wreck. Officials said one vehicle overturned, power lines came down and people were trapped in both the bus and at least one car.

Baltimore County Fire Chief Joe Dixon told reporters the scene was enormous and chaotic.

“It’s more like a war scene,” he said.

Authorities initially reported that at least 33 people had been taken to local hospitals, including one critical patient who was airlifted to a medical facility. Local reports later said 36 people were injured in the crash.

A second-alarm mass casualty incident was declared as first responders rushed to the area. At least 15 ambulances were deployed, and roughly 100 first responders worked the scene as crews rescued victims, treated the injured and secured the damaged building.

The Baltimore County Fire Department later said all patients had been transported. A Family Information Center line was opened at 410-887-1151 so loved ones could receive official updates.

It was not immediately clear how many of the injured were passengers on the bus and how many were inside private vehicles. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said his administration was closely monitoring the situation.

“Dawn and I are keeping everyone impacted in our hearts and prayers,” Moore said in a statement.

“We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors. We’ve been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground.”

Baltimore County Councilman Julian Jones also said he had been in contact with local responders as the emergency unfolded.

“A coordinated emergency response is well underway, and I have every confidence in the first responders working with urgency to rescue those in danger, care for the injured and bring this emergency to a safe conclusion,” Jones said.

“My prayers are with everyone affected, especially the victims and their loved ones. I encourage residents to avoid the area and allow emergency crews the space they need to do their work safely.”

Images posted by the Baltimore County Fire Department showed the bus lodged into the FedEx building as emergency vehicles filled the area.

Officials have not yet released details on what may have led to the crash. Roads around the scene were closed as crews responded, and drivers were urged to avoid the area while investigators and emergency teams continued their work.
