Mitch McConnell’s mysterious hospital stay is raising more questions by the day — and newly released video of the 84-year-old senator being taken from his Washington, D.C., home has only poured gasoline on the speculation.

The Kentucky Republican was hospitalized on June 14 after emergency crews were called to his residence. His office has released only limited updates since then, saying he is receiving care and continues to recover, but the lack of detailed information has left Washington buzzing.

Now, video obtained by CNN appears to show a person believed to be McConnell lying still on a stretcher as first responders load him into an ambulance outside his home.

The footage was reportedly captured by a neighbor from a distance, and McConnell’s face is not clearly visible. Once inside the ambulance, the person on the stretcher appeared to be partially covered with an orange blanket.

Neighbors said the scene unfolded around 8:30 a.m. and immediately caused alarm. According to accounts, two ambulances and a fire truck were seen outside McConnell’s home while Capitol Police blocked off the street.

One witness said first responders would not identify the person involved at the time and only described the situation as a medical emergency. But the mystery deepened when another neighbor allegedly claimed to have gotten a clearer look.

“One of my neighbors is like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s Mitch, I saw his face,’” the witness told CNN.

The senator’s office has not publicly confirmed the exact reason for the emergency response. However, dispatch audio reviewed by multiple outlets reportedly included references to an unconscious person and cardiac arrest at McConnell’s address, along with CPR in progress.

McConnell’s team initially confirmed only that the senator had been admitted to the hospital and was “receiving excellent care.”

In a later update, his office said McConnell “appreciates the outpouring of support” and “continues to improve.” His team also claimed he has been working closely with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.

Those reassurances have not stopped the speculation.

Allies of McConnell have tried to calm the storm, insisting the longtime senator is alert, engaged and still involved in work. Scott Jennings, a CNN commentator and longtime McConnell adviser, said he recently spoke with McConnell by phone for nearly 20 minutes.

According to Jennings, the conversation covered Iran, Ukraine, the situation in Maine, a visit to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and even a little Senate history.

“I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible,” Jennings wrote.

But not everyone is buying the carefully worded updates.

Some conservatives have openly questioned what is really going on behind the scenes. Far-right commentator Laura Loomer claimed without evidence that McConnell was “brain dead” and accused Republicans of hiding the truth about his condition.

Her claim has not been confirmed by McConnell’s office or any official medical source.

Still, the senator’s extended absence has become impossible to ignore. McConnell has not been seen publicly since mid-June, and his health has been a sensitive subject in Washington for years.

The former Senate Republican leader previously suffered a serious fall in 2023 and had several public freezing episodes that sparked concern about his ability to continue serving.

Now, with the Senate preparing to return from its July 4 recess, McConnell’s absence could carry real political consequences. He remains a powerful figure on the Senate Appropriations Committee, where Republicans hold a narrow edge.

For now, his office says he is recovering. But after weeks of limited updates, a chilling ambulance video and growing questions from both critics and allies, the mystery around Mitch McConnell’s health is only getting louder.
