A massive fire tore through a training center in India on Monday, killing at least 14 people and leaving terrified students trapped inside the burning building.
The deadly blaze broke out in Lucknow, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, around 3 p.m., sending thick black smoke pouring into the sky as police and fire crews raced to the scene.
Inside the building, panic quickly spread.
Students and others trapped by the flames were seen desperately trying to escape. Some reportedly smashed windows, while others jumped from the building in a frantic bid to survive.
One witness told NDTV that as many as five to seven students jumped from the burning structure.
“One of them also suffered broken bones,” the witness said.
Another witness told ANI that rescuers arrived to find heavy smoke billowing from the building, which reportedly housed a coaching center, a pet shop and several other stores.
“There is a library or a computer course institution here,” the witness said. “When we reached the spot, we saw thick smoke billowing from the building.”
The man said he and others were able to help save several people before the fire became even more dangerous.
“We managed to save 5-6 people,” he said. “After the fire broke out, a man jumped from the building in panic and was seriously injured.”
The inferno raged for more than an hour before firefighters finally brought it under control.
But the horror did not end there.
Rescuers were later seen drilling into the side of the charred building as they searched through the burned-out wreckage for survivors. Authorities warned the death toll could still rise as emergency crews continued combing through the scene.
Terrifying images from the area showed flames ripping through the building as firefighters battled to stop the blaze from spreading.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences after the deadly fire.
“Anguished by the loss of lives in a fire mishap in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh,” Modi wrote on X. “My condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest.”
He added that rescue operations were underway and said authorities were providing “all possible assistance.”
Modi also announced that compensation would be paid to the families of those killed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
An investigation has been launched.
