At Least 5 Dead and 25 Injured After Temple Roof Collapses

At least five people were killed and 25 others were injured when part of a temple roof suddenly collapsed in India, burying worshipers who had gathered for prayers and a community meal.

The horrifying tragedy unfolded Saturday, June 20, at the Yashwasi temple in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district, where dozens of people had come together for weekly prayers.

According to officials, part of the temple roof, which was still under construction, suddenly gave way, sending debris crashing down on the worshipers below.

CCTV footage shared on social media showed several dozen people standing inside the temple moments before disaster struck. The structure, surrounded by scaffolding, suddenly collapsed, trapping people underneath.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene and worked for about two and a half hours to pull victims from the rubble.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the deadly collapse in a statement shared on X, offering condolences to the families of those killed.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to them,” Fadnavis said, adding, “We share in the grief of their families.”

Officials said the injured were taken for treatment as authorities launched an investigation into what caused the roof to collapse.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sorrow over the tragedy.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the wall collapse in Parbhani, Maharashtra,” Modi wrote in a statement on X. “My condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. Praying for the swift recovery of the injured.”

The government has announced financial assistance for the families of those who died, according to Maharashtra Minister of State Meghna Sakore Bordikar.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether more victims could be found as the investigation continues.
