A late-night gathering on Chicago’s South Side turned into chaos when an SUV pulled up and gunmen inside opened fire on a crowd, leaving at least 12 people wounded, police said.
The shooting happened late Friday, sending victims scrambling for cover as bullets tore through the street. According to Chicago police, two people inside the SUV began firing into the crowd before the vehicle sped away.
Among the victims were eight men and four women, ranging in age from 17 to 47. Two male victims were left in critical condition, police said. One of them was shot in the thigh.
The wounded were rushed to four different hospitals as first responders worked through the aftermath of the attack. Police said another man suffered unknown injuries but refused medical treatment.
Officers initially responded to a report of just one person shot. When they arrived, they found a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds to his back. Both were listed in fair condition.
The mass shooting came during a violent stretch in Chicago, with police reporting at least 21 people shot across the city since Friday evening. Four of those victims died.
The timing made the violence even more heartbreaking for many in the community. The shooting happened on Juneteenth, a holiday meant to celebrate freedom and the end of slavery in the United States.
Earlier that same day, former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to the Obama Presidential Center on the city’s South Side, a moment meant to mark hope and history for the neighborhood.
Instead, by nightfall, another Chicago community was left reeling from gunfire.
Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for gun violence victims, told CBS News that a mass shooting on Juneteenth was especially painful.
“It should be celebrating,” Price said. “Fireworks should not turn into gunshots.”
As of the latest update, detectives were still investigating the shooting. Police have not released additional details about the suspects or a possible motive.

🙏🙏🙏praying for all the people who were injured🙏🙏🙏
