A woman’s ordinary walk down a quiet street turned into a nightmare when a manhole cover suddenly flipped beneath her feet and sent her plunging into the drainage system below.
Shocking security footage from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, shows 32-year-old Fabiana Rosa staring at her phone moments after stepping off a motorbike taxi on Sunday, May 31. Seconds later, she steps onto what appears to be a covered manhole.
Then, without warning, the metal cover gives way.
Rosa disappears straight into the hole as the cover flips up beneath her. The motorbike taxi driver who had just dropped her off immediately turns back and rushes to help, while stunned passersby race toward the scene.
Emergency crews eventually pulled Rosa to safety and took her to a nearby hospital.
“I thought I was going to die, because the water was hitting my chest and the hole was very deep,” Rosa told Brazilian media after the terrifying fall.
The 32-year-old was reportedly struck by the manhole cover as she fell and suffered injuries across her body.
Local reports said the cover had allegedly been moved during the night by two would-be metal thieves. Security footage from around 2 a.m. reportedly showed two men removing the manhole cover before trying to put it back in place — but failing to secure it properly.
The disturbing incident comes just two weeks after a similar manhole horror in New York City ended in tragedy.
Westchester grandmother Donike Gocaj, 56, died after falling down a 10-foot manhole outside Cartier on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. During that horrifying incident, Gocaj could reportedly be heard screaming that she was dying after the fall.
The back-to-back incidents have sparked fresh fears over dangerous manholes in busy public areas.
In New York City, complaints about open manholes have nearly doubled this year, according to public data, raising serious questions about whether enough is being done to protect pedestrians from hidden dangers right beneath their feet.
