Anthony Guidera, the veteran actor known for roles in The Godfather Part III and Species, has died at 65 after a sudden medical emergency that left his family searching for answers.
Guidera passed away Saturday after spending nearly three weeks on life support, according to his wife, Valarie Guidera.
The heartbreaking ordeal began on May 11, when the actor collapsed in the living room of the couple’s Southern California home.
Valarie said her husband’s heart suddenly stopped beating, leading to a frantic emergency rush to a nearby hospital.
Doctors were able to stabilize Guidera, but he never recovered enough to leave intensive care.
The actor remained on life support for nearly three weeks as physicians tried to determine what had caused his heart to stop so suddenly.
But according to Valarie, doctors were unable to give the family a clear explanation.
After weeks without improvement, Guidera’s family made the painful decision to honor his previously stated wishes about end-of-life care.
His wife said the actor had made it clear in an advance directive that he did not want to remain on prolonged life support.
Guidera was taken off life support and brought home, where he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones before dying peacefully.
His official cause of death has not yet been determined.
Guidera built a career as a recognizable character actor, appearing in several major Hollywood projects. He was best known to many movie fans for his role in The Godfather Part III, the 1990 final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary crime saga.
He also appeared in the 1995 sci-fi horror hit Species.
His sudden death has left fans stunned, especially as his family continues to wait for answers about the mysterious medical crisis that claimed his life.
