Woman Falls 10 Floors Down Apartment Trash Chute

A New Jersey woman was rescued from an apartment building trash chute after falling roughly 10 floors and becoming trapped in a pile of backed-up garbage, officials said.

The frightening incident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at an apartment building located at 150 Main Street in Hackensack.

According to the Hackensack Fire Department, firefighters were called to the building after a 911 caller reported that a woman had entered the trash chute on the 14th floor.

Firefighters, police and EMS crews rushed to the scene, but first responders did not initially know exactly where the woman was inside the chute.

When rescue teams arrived, they discovered she had fallen to around the third or fourth floor of the building. She was stuck inside the chute with garbage that had backed up around her.

Crews quickly launched a complex rescue operation.

Some firefighters used saws to cut away panels from the chute, while others prepared for the possibility of a rope rescue or even breaking through a wall to reach her.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to remove enough trash from the shaft to reach the woman. They eventually pulled her out feet first.

The rescue took 28 minutes from the time first responders were dispatched, according to officials.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was immediately treated by EMS at the scene. Her condition was not immediately known.

One firefighter was also taken to a nearby medical center after suffering an arm injury during the rescue.

Officials have not said what caused the woman to fall into the chute.

Photos shared by the fire department after the rescue showed piles of garbage lining the floor near the chute.

Because of the conditions inside the trash shaft, all first responders and equipment involved in the rescue had to be decontaminated afterward.

The Hackensack Fire Department has not yet released additional details about the woman’s condition.
