Gunmen Open Fire on Popular Music Festival

A beloved Ohio summer festival turned into a scene of terror Saturday after gunfire erupted near the crowded Old West End Festival in Toledo, leaving at least 12 people shot and two critically wounded.

Police said the chaos broke out just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday near the festival grounds, where several hundred people had gathered for live music, food, family events and other summer festivities.

Authorities believe at least two gunmen opened fire and may have been shooting at each other when bystanders were hit.

“They were probably shooting at each other,” Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan said Saturday night.

The shooters were still on the run as of Saturday night, leaving the city shaken and investigators scrambling for answers.

Among the victims, the youngest was just 14 years old and the oldest was 61, police Lt. Dan Gerken said. Most of those injured were believed to be in their early 20s.

Two victims were listed in critical condition.

The Old West End Festival is a longtime Toledo tradition, known for drawing families and neighbors for music, food markets, a beer garden and children’s activities. But Saturday’s celebration was shattered in seconds when bullets started flying.

Police said extra officers had already been assigned to the festival, and a large number of off-duty officers were also working security. Mobile security cameras were in use as well.

Still, the violence unfolded in the middle of a crowded community event.

“It’s just a shame when a few people, for whatever reasons going through their head, decide to disrupt something that has been a beloved community event for many, many, many years,” Heffernan said.

Investigators said the case remains in its early stages. Police are interviewing victims and witnesses while reviewing camera footage from the area.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he was “deeply concerned” by the shooting and called summer festivals places where families should feel safe.

“Summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence,” DeWine wrote on X. “Fran and I are praying for everyone impacted by the incident at the Old West End Festival, and we are confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved in this senseless crime.”

After the shooting, the Old West End Association announced that Sunday’s festival events would be canceled.

“After discussion with festival organizers, law enforcement and the City of Toledo, we feel that it would not be compassionate, responsible or possible to continue [the] festival,” the organization said.

As of late Saturday, no arrests had been announced.
