Theme Park Visitors Injured After Ride Suddenly Collapses (Video)

A fun day at an amusement park turned into sheer terror after a swing ride suddenly toppled over, sending riders crashing toward the ground.

At least five people were injured Thursday, May 28, when the ride collapsed at Happyland Amusement Park near the Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala, India, according to multiple reports.

The terrifying incident happened around 2 p.m. local time during a busy school vacation season, when the park was reportedly filled with families and tourists.

Video of the frightening moment showed dozens of riders seated in hanging chairs as the swing ride spun high in the air. Everything appeared normal at first.

Then, within seconds, the top of the ride began leaning sharply to one side.

As the structure tilted, some riders were dragged dangerously low. Several chairs slammed into a yellow barrier and hit the ground as horrified bystanders watched the chaos unfold.

At least five people, including two children, were injured in the collapse. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 54 and were identified as tourists from Nagercoil, India, according to India Today.

Four of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals with fractures and other injuries. They were later reported to be in stable condition, according to the Associated Press.

One woman suffered more serious injuries and was transferred to another hospital for specialized treatment.

Early findings from police suggest the horrifying collapse may have been caused by failing welds and aging equipment.

Authorities said the welding joints and supporting metal structure of the ride’s giant wheel appeared to have failed while the attraction was operating.

Parts of the iron support frame reportedly snapped, causing the ride to tilt and riders to fall. Witnesses said they heard a loud snapping sound just before the ride came crashing down.

“The wear and tear of the machine parts seems to have played a role in the accident,” a police official said, according to The New Indian Express.

The official added that an inspection showed the ride appeared to be affected by age, but the immediate cause of the collapse was believed to be welding failure that caused a metal part to break away.

Police are now investigating whether the ride had undergone required maintenance inspections and safety certification checks before the accident.

Officials said action could be taken against park management if investigators find that negligence or safety violations played a role in the frightening incident.

For families who went to the park expecting a harmless day of fun, the sudden collapse turned into a nightmare in seconds.
