Julie Andrews has fans talking after the beloved Hollywood icon made a rare video appearance for a deeply personal cause — only to be met with cruel comments from online trolls.
The 90-year-old star of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music appeared in a recorded message for the World Parkinson’s Congress, where she offered support for Parkinson’s disease research and welcomed attendees to the major global event.
But instead of simply honoring the legendary actress for lending her voice to an important cause, some social media users focused on her appearance and unleashed a wave of harsh remarks.
The clip was shared online by the World Parkinson Coalition and Parkinson’s Europe. In it, Andrews appeared calm, composed, and gracious as she spoke about the need to fight the devastating neurological disease.
“Good evening, everyone, I’m Julie Andrews and I’m pleased to welcome you to the seventh World Parkinson’s Congress,” Andrews said in the video.
“Your participation is invaluable as we seek to find a cure to this terrible disease. I know well how devastating it can be,” she continued.
“May we all become a beacon of light to stop it in its tracks. Count me in as a red thread. Thank you.”
Her message was meant to inspire hope. Instead, the rare appearance quickly drew ugly attention from online critics who mocked the actress’ face and age.
Some trolls made disturbing comments about her skin and makeup, while others speculated about possible cosmetic procedures. A few even suggested the screen legend looked frail or unwell, fueling baseless fears about her health.
The backlash stunned many longtime fans, who rushed to defend Andrews and remind critics that she is not only 90 years old, but one of the most cherished performers in entertainment history.
Friends and supporters close to the actress were reportedly furious that Andrews was attacked for simply appearing on camera in support of a charitable cause.
One source told RadarOnline.com that fans were horrified by the reaction.
“Julie has given generations joy through her work and people were horrified to see her subjected to such ugly personal attacks over simply appearing on camera at 90 years old,” the insider said.
Another source said the speculation about her appearance went too far.
“People have been making horrible comments about her face and skin when the reality is she’s a 90-year-old woman who has lived an extraordinary life,” the insider said. “The trolling crossed a line very quickly.”
Andrews became a household name after winning the Academy Award for Mary Poppins in 1965. She then cemented her place as one of the most beloved stars in movie history with her unforgettable role as Maria in The Sound of Music opposite Christopher Plummer.
For older fans, Andrews remains a symbol of grace, elegance, and old Hollywood charm. For younger audiences, she later became known as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel with Anne Hathaway.
Even after decades in the spotlight, Andrews has continued working. She recently introduced herself to a whole new generation of viewers as the voice of Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton, a role that earned her an Emmy Award.
In 2022, Andrews revealed that despite narrating the smash-hit series, she had never actually met the cast in person.
“You know I’ve never met the company in person,” Andrews told Today host Hoda Kotb.
“Of course, I see them on the show sometimes,” she added. “But I do all my recording far, far away from them.”
Andrews has also continued to write and create, despite suffering a devastating blow to her career in 1997 when throat surgery permanently damaged her famous singing voice.
The loss was heartbreaking for the actress, whose voice had helped define some of the most beloved musicals ever made. But instead of disappearing from public life, Andrews found a new creative outlet through writing.
She has co-authored several children’s books with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, including The Great American Mousical, which is now being reissued.
In a 2023 interview, Andrews admitted that writing helped give her purpose after the painful loss of her singing career.
“I would go completely mad if I didn’t have some lovely thing to work on,” she said.
“I think really, since I had a bad surgery on my throat, I’ve just turned to this with Emma and it’s been such a joy,” Andrews added. “It has been very refreshing for me and reviving in a way, because of course, it was a very sad event.”
Andrews is the mother of Emma Walton Hamilton, whom she shares with her late ex-husband Tony Walton. She also raised daughters Amy Leigh Edwards and Joanna Lynne Edwards with her late husband Blake Edwards.
Despite the cruel online chatter, supporters say Andrews’ appearance should be celebrated, not picked apart.
At 90 years old, the movie legend is still using her platform to support important causes, inspire fans, and remind the world why she remains one of the most admired stars of all time.
For many, the backlash says far more about the trolls than it does about Julie Andrews.

God bless Julie Andrews for fighting for Parkinson’s and other great causes.🙏❤️
