Anderson Cooper may be best known for delivering the news on CNN, but insiders claim the silver-haired broadcaster could have his eye on a very different kind of podium.
According to a new report, Cooper is being linked to one of the most coveted jobs in television: hosting Jeopardy!
The longtime CNN anchor, 58, is reportedly watching his next move carefully as questions swirl about his future at the cable news network. His contract situation and CNN’s looming ownership changes have allegedly sparked chatter that Cooper could be looking for a major career pivot.
And that pivot, insiders say, could put him directly in Ken Jennings’ path.
“Everybody is waiting to see what Anderson does when his contract at CNN runs out and the new owners take over,” one insider told RadarOnline. “He has a deep passion for game shows in general and is a massive fan of Jeopardy! in particular.”
That part is no secret.
Cooper has appeared on Jeopardy! several times over the years. He has competed on the show four times, reportedly winning twice, and he has also stepped behind the podium as a guest host.
Now, sources claim his name is being floated again as Jennings continues to face grumbling from some die-hard fans.
Jennings, 52, has been part of the Jeopardy! universe for years. He became a household name as one of the show’s greatest champions before eventually becoming its host following the death of beloved longtime host Alex Trebek.
But replacing Trebek was never going to be easy.
Trebek, who died in November 2020, hosted the show for decades and became one of the most trusted faces on television. His calm, polished style helped turn Jeopardy! into a nightly ritual for millions of viewers.
Jennings has kept the show going, but critics have accused him of being stiff on camera. Others have pointed to awkward moments and occasional gaffes that have left some viewers wondering whether Sony could eventually look for a bigger name.
“Once again, Ken has a reason to watch his back and keep working on his own hosting,” the insider claimed, “because the Sony TV executives are always looking at sharpening and refining one of their biggest cash cows.”
And Jeopardy! is still a very big cash cow.
The show reportedly remains a ratings powerhouse, pulling in around 8 million viewers a night. But insiders claim Jennings has not consistently matched the heights reached during Trebek’s reign, when the late host could draw as many as 12 million viewers.
That has allegedly left Sony looking at every possible way to keep the franchise fresh.
In recent years, Jeopardy! bosses have expanded the brand with spin-offs and special editions, including Celebrity Jeopardy!, Pop Culture Jeopardy!, and ESPN Jeopardy!
That could open the door for Cooper even if Jennings keeps the main gig.
“Anderson is a special talent and they could credibly create a special version of the show just for him to host,” the source said.
Still, insiders claim the real prize is the regular Jeopardy! job.
“But Ken’s job is the one everybody wants,” the insider added. “Anderson has that Alex Trebek-like gravitas that Ken still lacks, even after all the years he’s been involved in the Jeopardy! universe.”
Cooper’s cool, serious style could make him an appealing choice for executives looking to bring back some of that old-school authority. He has spent decades handling breaking news, political chaos, and live television pressure, which could translate well to a quiz show that depends on timing, control, and credibility.
For Jennings, the report may be another reminder that no television throne is ever completely safe.
He may have the job now, but if Cooper is truly interested, the Jeopardy! power struggle could get very interesting very fast.
