Rosie O’Donnell is opening up about a painful chapter in her family life after visiting her troubled daughter behind bars.
The comedian and former talk show host shared an emotional message on Instagram and Substack after seeing her 28-year-old daughter, Chelsea O’Donnell, in a Wisconsin prison.
“I will walk beside you, help and guide you,” O’Donnell wrote in a poem posted as part of a two-part reflection titled “before and after.”
Chelsea was sentenced to six years of probation in March after pleading guilty to three drug-related felony charges. She is currently serving time in Wisconsin, where O’Donnell said the reality of seeing her daughter “in lockdown” left her shaken.
“I feel like I’m in a movie… someone else’s kid… someone else’s life,” O’Donnell wrote.
The mother and daughter have had a famously rocky relationship over the years, but O’Donnell said something changed when Chelsea reached out and asked her to come visit.
“She asked me to… a first for her at 28 years old,” O’Donnell wrote.
For Rosie, the visit appears to have been heartbreaking but hopeful. She said the two have grown closer during the painful ordeal, despite the fear and uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s future.
“We have gotten closer thru these tense times, and I’m grateful for that,” O’Donnell wrote.
She added that she is thankful Chelsea is alive and already looking ahead to what comes next.
“Looking forward to her release,” O’Donnell wrote. “Planning her post prison journey. Drug free.”
The emotional post marks a rare vulnerable moment from O’Donnell, who has publicly clashed with Chelsea in the past. But this time, the message was not about anger or estrangement. It was about a mother trying to hold on to hope while her daughter faces the consequences of addiction and legal trouble.
