A family’s joyful celebration of the New York Knicks’ championship win turned into a nightmare after an LAPD officer shot and killed their beloved dog while responding to reports of a screaming woman.
The Los Angeles Police Department had reportedly been called to a condo after someone heard yelling coming from inside. But according to the family, the noise was not a sign of danger. It was pure excitement after the Knicks pulled off their long-awaited NBA Championship victory.
Moments before the deadly encounter, the family’s 2-year-old dog, Jameson, had been dressed in a Knicks T-shirt as the family celebrated the team’s historic win.
The dog, described as a golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle mix, was allegedly shot after police claimed he charged at an officer during the welfare check.
The family, however, insisted Jameson was not dangerous. They said he was friendly, excited and caught up in the chaos of the celebration.
Cell phone footage captured the devastating aftermath as Jameson’s owner screamed in disbelief.
“Oh my God! Oh my God. I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening,” she yelled.
She then tried to explain to officers why the family had been making so much noise.
“We were just so happy. We were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks,” she said.
The woman could also be heard shouting through tears: “He’s such a good dog!”
Neighbors said they were stunned by the sound of screaming and the sudden police response in what they described as a normally quiet California neighborhood.
“The screaming I heard was like, ‘Ah! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ Like just, pure screaming,” neighbor Raymon Alvarez told ABC 7. “I didn’t think they were gunshots at first because this area is not really known for any sort of gun violence.”
The incident is reportedly now under review by the department.
The tragedy unfolded as Knicks fans across the country erupted after the team defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Texas, bringing the NBA title back to New York for the first time since 1973.
Led by captain Jalen Brunson, the Knicks’ stunning win sent fans pouring into the streets of New York City. But what began as a massive celebration quickly spiraled into chaos.
Crowds climbed traffic lights, street signs and vehicles near Times Square. A row of five school buses was vandalized, with fans crawling onto the roofs and others tearing parts off the vehicles.
According to the New York Police Department, 63 people were arrested during the post-game mayhem. Ten officers were reportedly injured while trying to control the crowds. Four people were stabbed, and a teenager was shot.
Security had already been a major flashpoint throughout the Knicks’ final stretch.
During Games 3 and 4 at Madison Square Garden, heavy security measures were put in place, including street closures around the arena. President Donald Trump attended Game 3, prompting Secret Service involvement and a major security operation.
But the lockdown-style security continued even after Trump was no longer in attendance, frustrating fans who were trying to get near the Garden.
The heightened precautions reportedly remained in place during Game 5, even though the game was not being played at Madison Square Garden. Instead, the venue hosted a 5 Seconds of Summer concert while the city organized an outdoor Knicks watch party nearby.
But for one Los Angeles family, the Knicks’ championship night will forever be remembered not for a historic win, but for the devastating loss of their dog.
What started as cheering ended with heartbreak.
