The mystery surrounding Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother has taken an even darker turn as top criminal profilers now believe the person behind Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance may have had one chilling goal in mind — emotionally destroy the Today star.
More than three months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the middle of the night, investigators still have no answers. But according to a disturbing new NewsNation special, experts fear Savannah herself may have been the true target all along.
During NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery, investigative reporter Brian Entin sat down with some of the nation’s most respected criminal behavior experts to break down the baffling case — and their conclusions were heartbreaking.
Dr. Ann Burgess, the legendary criminal profiler who inspired Netflix’s Mindhunter, suggested the motive may have had less to do with Nancy personally and more to do with inflicting pain on her famous daughter.
“When you ask who’s suffering the most, you have to look at the family,” Burgess explained. “It could be Savannah.”
When Entin directly asked if the abductor may have wanted Savannah to “suffer,” Burgess answered with a chilling “yes.”
The theory is especially devastating considering how close Savannah and her mother have always been. The NBC star lost her father when she was just 16 years old, making Nancy one of the most important people in her life. Over the years, Nancy even became a familiar face to viewers through appearances on Today alongside her daughter.
Experts say Savannah appears deeply haunted by the possibility that her fame may have somehow played a role in her mother’s disappearance.
Behavior analyst Dr. Casey Jordan noted that Savannah has clearly been emotionally crushed by the ordeal, while Burgess added that the television personality is carrying overwhelming guilt.
Another expert, forensic psychologist Dr. Gary Brucato, floated an even more disturbing possibility — that whoever abducted Nancy may have wanted permanent notoriety by attaching themselves to a high-profile celebrity case forever.
Brucato explained that criminals sometimes become obsessed with infamous figures because it guarantees their names will live on in public memory. He compared the situation to how Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, became permanently linked to the former president throughout history.
According to Brucato, the suspect may have harbored resentment toward Savannah’s fame and wanted attention for committing such a shocking crime.
The terrifying theories come after Savannah previously broke down in tears while discussing her mother’s disappearance during an emotional interview with Hoda Kotb.
Savannah admitted she feared Nancy may have been kidnapped because criminals believed her famous daughter had money.
Through tears, she confessed the thought was “too much to bear,” apologizing directly to her missing mother on-air.
“I’m so sorry, mommy,” Savannah said emotionally.
Nancy Guthrie was reportedly abducted from her Tucson home during the early morning hours of February 1. Despite months of searching, no major breakthrough has been announced and the case remains unsolved.
As the desperate hunt continues, the horrifying possibility that Nancy was targeted simply because she was Savannah Guthrie’s mother is only adding to the family’s nightmare.
