HS Coach ‘Fighting for His Life’ After Freak Accident During Track Meet

A routine high school track meet in Texas turned into a nightmare after a beloved coach was struck in the head by a shot put during a shocking accident that left him fighting for his life in intensive care.

Blake Crutsinger, an assistant coach at Ponder High School, suffered a skull fracture and severe brain swelling after the heavy metal ball hit him during a state competition in Tyler on Saturday, May 2.

The terrifying incident happened during the Region II-3A University Interscholastic League track and field meet, according to local reports. Witnesses described the moment as a devastating freak accident that stunned athletes, coaches and spectators alike.

Crutsinger’s wife, Leslie, later revealed the extent of his injuries in emotional Facebook updates shared just hours after the accident.

“Thank you to everyone who has been praying for Blake and sending messages today,” she wrote, while also asking people to keep the young athlete involved in the accident in their prayers.

“Please pray for the young man from the other school who is taking this accident very hard,” she added.

The coach, who also works with the football program at Ponder Independent School District, underwent emergency surgery Monday to help relieve dangerous swelling on his brain.

Doctors reportedly had to remove part of his skull during the procedure, and Leslie said he is expected to remain in the ICU for weeks before beginning a long rehabilitation process.

“For the long term plan, he will be in ICU until he can have the flap put back on,” she explained. “This will be a minimum of 2-4 weeks but could easily be longer.”

She added that he will likely be transferred to a rehab facility in Dallas once he is stable enough.

Despite the horrifying situation, Leslie praised the fast-thinking staff members, trainers and emergency crews who rushed to help her husband moments after he collapsed.

“The quick actions of the coaches, trainers, and any medical staff that helped at the school and the quick response of the ambulance was a game changer in Blake’s prognosis,” she wrote. “The adults and athletes who were there and witnessed what happened were shook to say the least.”

Now, the small Texas community roughly 60 miles northwest of Dallas is rallying around the injured coach and his family as they face an uncertain road ahead.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with Coach Crutsinger and his family during this time,” Superintendent Dr. James Hill said in a statement. “We are in constant prayer for them and ask that you join us in praying for complete healing and a full recovery.”

  1. I admire so much the coach’s wife, stating that she appreciated the prayers for her husband, but also to pray for the young man who was involved in the accident. I can only imagine how he feels. I pray, the coach will recover completely, and also the young man won’t feel guilty, because an accident is an accident.
