Grandfather Killed in Freak Hunting Accident After Bear Falls on Him

A bear-hunting expedition in rural Virginia turned tragic when a falling bear fatally injured one of the hunters.

The incident occurred on December 9 in Lunenburg County, nestled between Richmond and Danville, according to a statement from Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources.

Lester C. Harvey, 58, of Phenix, Virginia, was part of a hunting group tracking a bear that had climbed a tree to escape. As the group moved to a safer distance, one hunter fired a shot, killing the bear. Tragically, the 250-pound animal fell from the tree, striking Harvey, who stood roughly 10 feet from the base.

“It all happened so quickly,” said a member of the hunting party, who declined to be identified. “We were just trying to follow the protocols for a safe hunt. It’s a devastating loss.”

Fellow hunters attempted to provide first aid on the scene. Harvey was rushed to two hospitals for treatment, but the injuries proved fatal. He passed away on December 13, four days after the accident.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the inherent risks of hunting,” the Department of Wildlife Resources said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Harvey’s family and friends.”

Harvey, a self-employed contractor, was well-known in his community as an avid outdoorsman and devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, five children, and eight grandchildren. An obituary described him as “passionate about the wilderness and a pillar of strength for his family.”

“He loved hunting, but his greatest joy was being with his grandchildren,” shared Harvey’s daughter, Melissa, in an interview. “We’re devastated, but we’re holding on to the memories of his laughter and love.”

This tragic accident isn’t isolated. In 2018, a hunter in Alaska was critically injured when a bear, shot on a ridge, tumbled down and struck him. Rocks dislodged by the bear compounded the injuries. A year later, in North Carolina, another hunter survived a terrifying encounter when a bear fell out of a tree and attacked him before both plunged off a cliff.

Experts warn that hunting large animals, particularly bears, carries unique risks. “Hunters should always consider their surroundings, including potential dangers from above,” said John Mitchell, a wildlife safety instructor.

As Lunenburg County mourns the loss of Lester Harvey, local leaders emphasize the need for safety in outdoor pursuits. A candlelight vigil will be held in Phenix this weekend to honor Harvey’s life and legacy.

“This was a freak accident, but it’s a painful reminder of how precious life is,” said family friend Robert Jenkins. “Lester’s memory will live on in the stories we share and the love he gave.”
