Amusement Park Riders Left Dangling in the Air for Hours (Video)

A night of family fun turned into a sky-high nightmare after an amusement park ride suddenly stalled, leaving 16 people trapped 75 feet in the air for hours.

The terrifying incident unfolded Friday evening at Adventureland on Long Island, where the Wave Twister ride malfunctioned around 7:30 p.m. with guests still strapped in.

The youngest rider was just 5 years old.

Authorities said the passengers, who ranged in age from 5 to 40, were left dangling high above the ground as emergency crews raced to the popular amusement park to begin a daring rescue.

Firefighters from multiple departments, including West Babylon, East Farmingdale and Amityville, rushed to the scene alongside Suffolk County Police and other emergency responders.

What followed was a tense, three-hour rescue operation as crews worked carefully to bring each stranded rider back down safely.

The last passenger was finally rescued around 10:40 p.m., long after darkness had settled over the park.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Still, the scary ordeal left families rattled as officials worked to determine what caused the newly opened ride to fail.

The Wave Twister had only opened in March and was part of Adventureland’s $10 million, five-phase redevelopment of its Legacy Corner. The ride was manufactured by Ride Engineers of Switzerland, according to the New York Post.

An Adventureland spokesperson said the park understands the fear felt by the riders and their families.

“For more than 60 years, Adventureland has enjoyed a proud record of safety and guest satisfaction,” the spokesperson said. “We understand the concern of the riders and their families who were involved today, and we will be working with our ride consultants to fully assess what happened.”

The park also confirmed the ride will remain closed until further review.

“Until further review, that ride will not be in service,” the spokesperson added. “We appreciate the dedication of the many first responder departments who skillfully assisted in getting our guests off the ride.”

The Long Island scare comes just weeks after another chilling amusement park malfunction in Texas.

In that incident, the Iron Shark coaster at Pleasure Pier suddenly stopped, leaving a group of students stuck facing straight up just before the peak of the ride’s 100-foot drop.

That rescue also took hours, with terrified riders stranded on the coaster’s steep incline before crews were finally able to bring them down.

Now, the Adventureland malfunction has sparked fresh fears over ride safety as families head into the busy summer amusement park season.
