Harry Potter actor Dave Legeno died in the unforgiving heat of Death Valley — and his body was not discovered for days.

Legeno, best known for playing the terrifying werewolf Fenrir Greyback in the Harry Potter movies, was just 50 when two hikers found his remains in a remote part of Death Valley National Park in California in July 2014.

Authorities said at the time that the British actor appeared to have died from heat-related causes.

“It appears that Legeno died of heat-related issues, but the Inyo County coroner will determine the final cause of death,” the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office said.

Legeno appeared as Greyback in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and both installments of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Long before becoming known to millions of movie fans, Legeno had built a very different career for himself.

The London native worked as a doorman and wrestler before becoming a boxer and mixed martial arts fighter, competing under the nickname “Lone Wolf.”

He later turned to acting, making his movie debut in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch before landing roles in Batman Begins and other films.

At the time of his death, Legeno had several projects in the works, including the medieval action movie Sword of Vengeance and Last Knights, which was reportedly in post-production.

News of his sudden death stunned his Harry Potter co-stars.

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, remembered Legeno as a talented performer who was completely different from the menacing characters he played on screen.

“Dave was a soft, kind gentleman off screen but had the skill to be the complete opposite on screen,” Felton said, adding that Legeno had “a heart of gold.”

Emma Watson also mourned the actor, saying she was “so sad” to hear of his death and describing him as “such a lovely man.”

Just a year before his death, Legeno had spoken warmly about his experience working on the Harry Potter movies.

He said the cast and crew made him feel like part of a family and recalled joking around with stars including Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman after filming stopped.

Professional MMA fighter Don Frye also paid tribute to his friend after learning Legeno had died.

“Just found out my good friend Dave Legeno’s body was found in Death Valley,” Frye said. “It was too soon for a man that good.”

Death Valley is one of the hottest and driest places on Earth and holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature.

Temperatures during the summer can soar to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, creating deadly conditions for hikers who become stranded or dehydrated in the park’s remote terrain.

Legeno’s shocking death brought an abrupt end to a career that had taken him from boxing rings and MMA fights to one of the biggest movie franchises in the world.
