College Football Player Dies at 21 After Tragic Car Crash

Gleaton Jones, a former walk-on running back for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, has passed away at the age of 21. His death follows a severe car crash on Tuesday, Dec. 10, that left him hospitalized with a critical brain injury.

The Porterfield Methodist Church in Jones’ hometown of Albany, Georgia, confirmed his passing on Friday, Dec. 13. Tributes have since poured in from teammates, friends, and the broader University of Georgia (UGA) community.

“Gleaton lived life to the fullest,” his family wrote in an obituary shared by Matthews Funeral Home. “His joy and enthusiasm touched everyone around him. Even at such a young age, he created a meaningful life for himself and for others.”

Known as “Gleat” by his closest friends, Jones was celebrated for his “magnetic personality” and his ability to bring happiness to those around him. “There was no room his bright light couldn’t fill,” the obituary continued.

Jones’ athletic prowess began at Deerfield-Windsor School, where he earned accolades as an All-Region football player, a GISA All-Star team member, and a state champion in track and field.

He joined the Bulldogs in 2021 as a walk-on running back, contributing to their 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship victory. Beyond the field, Jones was deeply involved in campus life, serving as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and pursuing a marketing degree from UGA’s Terry School of Business. He was set to graduate in spring 2025.

His future plans included returning to Albany to help manage his family’s farm alongside his father, Kirk Jones.

Students and community members have shared heartfelt memories of Jones on social media.

One UGA student recalled his kindness after a football game: “I didn’t know Gleaton super well, but he saw me walking near his house and ran outside to give me a hug. He was genuinely happy to see me—that’s just who he was.”

Another described him as “the funniest person, someone who could make any situation better.”

The UGA Barstool social media accounts also honored Jones, highlighting his role in bringing the community together through humor and warmth.

Jones is survived by his parents, Kirk and Marlin Jones; his brother, Cole; and his grandparents, Linda Fain, Earle Spurlock, and Mary Jones. He also leaves behind a large extended family and countless friends.

A celebration of his life is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 16, at the Wynfield Plantation in Albany.

Jones’ death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for someone so full of vitality and promise. His legacy, however, lives on in the hearts of those he touched, a testament to a young man who truly lived life to the fullest.
