’60 Minutes’ Star Admits the Media is Falling Apart

As trust in the media crumbles to record lows, even legacy insiders are raising alarm bells. Lesley Stahl, the veteran 60 Minutes reporter, delivered a bleak assessment of the free press’s future, declaring, “I’m very dark about it.”

Speaking at a packed event at the 92NY Center for Culture & Arts, Stahl didn’t mince words about the state of mainstream journalism. Joined by columnist Peggy Noonan, the two reflected on the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election and the mounting skepticism that now defines public opinion of the press.

“The press is fraying,” Stahl admitted, attributing the collapse to relentless criticism from figures like President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.

Stahl’s grim outlook comes as public trust in the media sinks to all-time lows. A recent Gallup poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans—a staggering 69%—express little to no confidence in the media’s ability to report fairly or accurately.

“The numbers don’t lie,” Stahl said. “We’re down there with the lawyers.”

The veteran journalist pointed fingers at Trump and Musk, who she claims have fueled public disdain for legacy outlets. “They’ve made it fashionable to say, ‘The legacy media is dead.’ And honestly, I don’t know how we come back from that.”

Trump, who has long railed against what he calls the “fake news media,” doubled down during his 2024 campaign, branding mainstream outlets as “corrupt” and “completely out of touch.” His message appears to have resonated. According to the same Gallup poll, 36% of Americans report having no trust at all in the press—a figure that has steadily climbed over the past decade.

Musk has also joined the fray, using his massive social media platform to target traditional outlets. “Legacy media doesn’t inform—it manipulates,” Musk tweeted last month to his millions of followers.

While Noonan attempted to inject optimism, saying, “Nothing’s going to stop you from being the free press,” Stahl wasn’t convinced. “You really are a sunny person, aren’t you?” she quipped. “I’m extremely worried about the press.”

Noonan acknowledged the challenges, citing the rise of digital platforms and echo chambers as significant threats. “It’s not just political rhetoric—it’s a complete transformation in how people consume information,” she said.

Both Stahl and Noonan agreed that the stakes couldn’t be higher. “If America lost freedom of the press and freedom of speech,” Noonan warned, “it would be the beginning of losing everything.”

But for critics of the mainstream media, these warnings may fall on deaf ears. Many believe legacy outlets are reaping what they’ve sown after years of perceived bias, sensationalism, and disconnect from everyday Americans.

“It’s a self-inflicted wound,” said Michael Reyes, an independent journalist. “The mainstream media alienated its audience by prioritizing narratives over facts. Now they’re paying the price.”

For legacy outlets like 60 Minutes, the future looks uncertain. “We’re hobbling,” Stahl admitted. “And I don’t know if we’ll ever fully recover.”

With the rise of alternative media and growing public distrust, traditional journalism faces a reckoning. Whether the industry can adapt—or whether it will be replaced entirely—remains to be seen.

For many Americans, though, the message is clear: trust in the press isn’t just broken—it’s shattered.

  1. Noonan needs to learn (and use) the difference between ‘America’ and ‘The United States’.

    1. “United States” being a shortened version of “United States of America”, this might be your big opportunity to explain the difference!

  2. The fact that the public don’t trust the Media anymore is completely the fault of the Media. So don’t put the blame on Musk or Trump. The Media stopped reporting the news they report their own bias opinions

    1. LameStreamMisleadia FAKE NEWS LIARS are just vastly over paid liars… and most polls say 98 – 100% don’t believe them… and they are unneeded, Trump emails us directly 1 – 5 times daily…

  3. I feel no pity for media that have crucified Donald Trump since 2016. They made their money then. Now that we, the people, are no longer cancelled, the real news is from our preferred sources, We do not prefer ABC, NBC,CBS,CNN, MSNBC and PBS. Cry more, y’all deserve to be in the unemployment lines for the lies you spread about Covid and covering for Biden’s failing mental abilities.

  4. Mental ability of the average American has always been under-rated by the mainstream news and Hollywood. Trying to shove your lies down the throats of Americans has finally failed. We have spoken.

  5. There you go, blaming President Elect Donald Trump and Elon for breaking up your hot line of hatred. Yes, media is failing, perhaps now they will return to Christ who never fails.
