Hollywood legend Michael Douglas is facing unexpected backlash over his explosive new memoir, with people reportedly close to the Oscar-winning actor questioning why he chose to expose decades-old romantic secrets involving some of the industry’s most famous women.
The 82-year-old star has pulled back the curtain on his colorful personal life in One Helluva Ride, a revealing autobiography released October 6 that chronicles everything from his legendary Hollywood career to his past relationships, personal struggles and 25-year marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones.
But instead of celebrating his extraordinary achievements, some insiders are accusing Douglas of going too far, suggesting that his decision to revisit private moments involving former lovers and co-stars is an unnecessary attempt to generate publicity.
One source told RadarOnline that the actor’s unusually personal disclosures have left some friends stunned, particularly given his decades of success and reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected leading men.
According to the insider, Douglas has an extraordinary story to tell without relying on intimate revelations about women he knew decades ago. The source described the approach as a “desperate attempt to grab headlines and sales” and questioned whether the veteran actor had considered how his former partners might feel about their private histories becoming public entertainment.
The criticism centers on a dilemma that has become increasingly familiar in Hollywood: When celebrities tell their life stories, how much of someone else’s private life are they entitled to reveal?
Douglas certainly hasn’t held back.
The actor revisits his experiences filming the provocative 1992 thriller Basic Instinct, offering behind-the-scenes details about intimate scenes with co-star Sharon Stone that have attracted renewed attention more than three decades after the movie’s release.
Among the revelations are Douglas’ recollections of the precautions taken during filming and an uncomfortable moment involving his facial hair that he says irritated Stone’s skin.
While the account offers an unusually candid glimpse behind one of the decade’s most controversial films, the RadarOnline source argued that sharing such personal details was unnecessary.
Stone has not publicly objected to those particular passages, and there is no indication that she has personally criticized Douglas over the memoir.
The actor also reveals that he secretly dated Basic Instinct co-star Jeanne Tripplehorn, a relationship that largely escaped public attention because audiences were so captivated by his on-screen chemistry with Stone.
Douglas describes another previously undisclosed romance involving Kathleen Turner, his co-star in the 1984 adventure comedy Romancing the Stone. The relationship remained private for more than 40 years, despite the pair’s undeniable chemistry on screen.
Those admissions have attracted considerable attention, particularly because Douglas was married to his first wife, Diandra Luker, during portions of that period.
However, there is an important distinction between the anonymous criticism and Douglas’ own account of how he prepared the book.
The actor has publicly stated that he contacted Turner and Tripplehorn before discussing their relationships, asking for their permission to include the stories. He told PEOPLE that Tripplehorn agreed, while his collaborators described his efforts to protect the privacy of people from his past.
Douglas has also rejected the suggestion that he included former partners simply to boast about his romantic history, explaining that the relationships were meaningful parts of his life rather than celebrity conquests.
Still, some insiders reportedly believe the memoir’s emphasis on personal encounters risks overshadowing a career that hardly needs sensational publicity.
After all, Douglas has earned two Academy Awards, produced the acclaimed classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and delivered unforgettable performances in Wall Street, Fatal Attraction and The American President.
His professional accomplishments alone could fill an autobiography, but One Helluva Ride goes considerably further.
The nearly 500-page book also examines his complicated upbringing as the son of screen legend Kirk Douglas, his struggles with addiction, his battle with cancer and the painful experiences his family endured during his son Cameron’s legal troubles and imprisonment.
In fact, Douglas has described the memoir as an opportunity to confront uncomfortable truths about his life rather than present a carefully polished Hollywood success story.
That includes his shortcomings as a husband and father, as well as the pressure of building an identity separate from his famous father’s towering reputation.
The book also offers a more tender perspective on his relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he married in 2000.
Douglas reflects on how his romance with the Welsh actress developed differently from many of his earlier relationships, describing a slower courtship that helped lay the foundation for their enduring marriage.
He writes that he was willing to take his time with Zeta-Jones rather than rush into the relationship, an approach he acknowledges was unusual for him.
The couple, who share two children, have weathered considerable public scrutiny, including a temporary separation in 2013, before reconciling.
Yet even those heartfelt reflections have struggled to compete with the headlines surrounding Douglas’ romantic revelations.
According to the RadarOnline insider, some of the actor’s acquaintances fear the publicity has distracted from the genuinely moving stories in his autobiography.
Douglas, meanwhile, has received praise from other reviewers for his willingness to confront difficult chapters of his past. The memoir has been celebrated by some critics for its honesty, humor and unusually detailed portrait of a changing Hollywood.
Ultimately, the controversy raises a question that extends beyond Douglas himself: Can a celebrity tell an unfiltered life story without reopening private chapters that others may prefer to leave in the past?
For an actor whose career helped define Hollywood’s golden age of adult dramas, that question has become an unexpected part of the conversation surrounding his long-awaited autobiography.
And while Douglas appears determined to tell his story on his own terms, the reaction demonstrates that even after more than five decades in the spotlight, a Hollywood legend can still find himself at the center of a very modern controversy.
