Prince William’s Shocking Confession About the Life He Wanted Instead of Becoming King

Prince William may be destined to inherit the British throne, but the future king has made a surprising confession about the very different life he once imagined for himself — and it had absolutely nothing to do with royal palaces, crowns or centuries-old traditions.

The 44-year-old Prince of Wales left audiences laughing during an unexpected appearance on The Graham Norton Show on October 23, revealing that he once dreamed of becoming a police officer before developing an even more unlikely ambition: working as a professional DJ.

While William treated the revelations as a hilarious trip down memory lane, his comments have sparked speculation about whether Britain’s future monarch once wished he could escape the extraordinary expectations placed on him from birth.

Unlike most children, William never had the freedom to choose his own future without considering the royal responsibilities awaiting him. As the eldest son of King Charles III and the late Princess Diana, he grew up knowing that one day he would be expected to lead the monarchy.

Yet, as he revealed to host Graham Norton, the young prince apparently had some decidedly ordinary career ambitions.

“I did want to be a policeman when I was younger,” William admitted, explaining that he believed he would have been good at the job.

Norton immediately seized the opportunity to tease his royal guest, joking that William certainly had the height for police work. Fellow guest Robert Irwin joined in, pointing out that the job required considerably more than a tall frame.

But the biggest surprise came when William revealed that his interest in law enforcement eventually gave way to a dream of entering the music industry.

The prince confessed that he went through a phase of wanting to become a DJ, even creating his own stage name: DJ Xara, with an X.

Unfortunately, his musical ambitions never progressed very far. William admitted that his DJ persona was not particularly impressive, and when Norton asked whether he had ever performed at school parties, the future king acknowledged that he had never become skilled enough.

The exchange sent the studio into laughter, offering a glimpse of a playful side of William rarely seen during his formal royal appearances.

But behind the jokes was a fascinating question: What might William’s life have looked like if he had been free to pursue a career entirely of his own choosing?

The possibility has attracted particular attention because of the dramatic differences between William’s royal journey and that of his younger brother, Prince Harry, who stepped away from senior royal duties with Meghan Markle in 2020.

Although Harry ultimately chose to build a new life outside the royal establishment, William has remained committed to his position as heir to the throne. His childhood ambitions offer an intriguing glimpse into the alternative paths he once considered, but there is no evidence that he seriously planned to abandon his royal future.

Interestingly, William did experience something resembling an ordinary working career before becoming a full-time royal.

After serving in the Royal Air Force, he became an air ambulance helicopter pilot, working with emergency medical crews to help patients facing life-threatening situations. He remained with the East Anglian Air Ambulance until 2017, when he stepped away to concentrate on his expanding royal responsibilities.

That experience also suggests his childhood dream of becoming a police officer may have reflected a genuine interest in emergency services rather than a desire to escape palace life.

Still, William has previously acknowledged that he intends to approach the monarchy differently from earlier generations.

During a candid 2025 interview with actor Eugene Levy, the prince discussed his hopes for modernizing the institution when he eventually becomes king, explaining that meaningful change was an important part of his vision for the future.

His latest television appearance offered a much lighter look at the man behind the royal title.

William joined Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and Robert Irwin for a special episode promoting his Earthshot Prize environmental initiative, which recognizes innovative efforts to address major environmental challenges.

The prince also discussed his family’s television habits and his enthusiasm for filmmaker Christopher Nolan, showing audiences that his interests extend well beyond royal ceremonies and official engagements.

His willingness to laugh at his younger self drew praise from viewers, many of whom welcomed seeing a more relaxed and approachable future king.

And while the revelation about his forgotten DJ ambitions provided one of the evening’s funniest moments, it also highlighted an unusual reality of William’s upbringing.

For most people, childhood career dreams eventually give way to unexpected opportunities and decisions. For William, however, the ultimate destination was determined long before he was old enough to understand what becoming king would mean.

Whether he ever genuinely wished to escape that destiny remains unknown. But for one memorable television appearance, the future monarch gave audiences a glimpse of the police officer — or perhaps the nightclub DJ — he might have become if history had given him a different future.
