Monaco’s royal family has been rocked by a shocking death after a 29-year-old relative of Prince Albert II was discovered lifeless near the Mediterranean coast, setting off a police investigation that has now led to criminal charges.
Antoine de Massy, a member of Monaco’s extended royal family, was found dead Sunday, October 25, after reportedly failing to appear at a family lunch. What initially appeared to be an unexplained tragedy has since taken a dramatic turn, with investigators examining his final hours and the circumstances surrounding a deadly fall.
On Wednesday, October 28, Monaco authorities announced that a 42-year-old Ukrainian man had been charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger. The man, who has reportedly lived in Monaco for approximately 30 years, was placed in pretrial detention as investigators continued working to piece together what happened.
According to Monaco’s prosecutor general, Stéphane Thibault, autopsy findings suggest de Massy died after falling approximately 43 feet from Boulevard du Larvotto onto an area behind a residential building. However, authorities have not established exactly how the fall occurred or what role, if any, the accused man played in the events leading up to it.
The circumstances surrounding de Massy’s final night have raised troubling questions.
According to reports citing sources familiar with the investigation, the young royal relative was seen leaving a nightclub during the early hours of Sunday morning. He was reportedly unsteady on his feet and being supported by another man.
Investigators subsequently reviewed surveillance footage and identified a man who had been in contact with de Massy shortly before his death. The 42-year-old was taken into custody Monday morning.
The suspect reportedly denied wrongdoing during police questioning and later declined to answer questions from the investigating judge. Prosecutors have not publicly detailed the specific conduct underlying the charges, and the man remains presumed innocent.
Authorities are now trying to determine precisely what happened between de Massy’s reported nightclub departure and his fatal fall. The investigation also seeks to establish whether the alleged failure to provide assistance occurred separately from the events connected to his death.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over one of Europe’s most prominent royal families, with Prince Albert and Princess Charlene publicly expressing their grief.
De Massy was the son of Baron Christian de Massy and Cécile Gelabale, and the grandson of Princess Antoinette, the elder sister of Prince Rainier III. That made him Prince Albert’s first cousin once removed and a member of the extended Grimaldi family, whose history is closely associated with Hollywood legend Grace Kelly.
Although he maintained a relatively private life away from the royal spotlight, de Massy had once dreamed of making an international name for himself in professional tennis.
He began playing at just 3 years old and eventually moved to Florida with his father to pursue intensive training. In a 2012 interview with Vogue Italia, the ambitious teenager spoke about the sacrifices required to chase his sporting dreams, revealing that he hoped to become the world’s top-ranked player or at least break into the top 20.
He also hoped to represent Monaco at the Olympic Games and counted tennis superstar Novak Djokovic among his sporting heroes. De Massy later pursued business interests, including a technology startup.
His sudden death has devastated a family with deep connections to Monaco’s sporting traditions.
In a statement released Monday, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene expressed their sadness over the loss, remembering de Massy as a passionate tennis player whose interests reflected his family’s longstanding involvement in the sport.
The royal couple also offered their condolences to his relatives and loved ones during what they described as a painful time.
For now, however, major questions remain unanswered about the young man’s final hours.
With an investigating judge overseeing the case and further examinations underway, authorities are working to establish the sequence of events that led to de Massy’s death. Whether the fatal fall was accidental, and how the criminal allegations relate to it, remain matters for the investigation.
The tragedy has left Monaco mourning a young member of its royal family while investigators search for answers about a night that ended in devastating circumstances.
