Armed Man Holds 13 Children Hostage in Terrifying School Standoff

A terrifying hostage crisis at a Brazilian preschool ended with an armed man dead and 13 young children rescued after police stormed a classroom where he had threatened to set everyone on fire.

The ordeal unfolded Friday, October 9, at the São Braz Municipal Early Childhood Education Center in Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil, after a man climbed over the school’s perimeter wall and entered the building carrying a knife.

According to Paraná state police, the intruder barricaded himself inside a classroom with 13 children, ages 4 and 5, and held them hostage for approximately three hours.

The suspect also carried what appeared to be a firearm, later identified as a replica, and spread a flammable liquid across the classroom floor while threatening to ignite it.

Police negotiators desperately tried to persuade him to release the children as heavily armed tactical officers surrounded the school.

Outside, frightened parents gathered near the building, some in tears as they waited for news about their children.

Authorities said the situation became increasingly dangerous when the suspect began acting aggressively toward the children, grabbing and injuring some of them.

Colonel Alexandre Lopes Dias, commander of special missions for Paraná’s Military Police, explained that officers decided to intervene when they feared the children were in immediate danger.

Police said the man was holding a lighter and threatening to start a fire when members of Brazil’s Special Police Operations Battalion, known as BOPE, identified an opportunity to enter the classroom.

As officers moved in, the suspect allegedly attempted to grab one of the children. Police opened fire, killing him and bringing the standoff to an end.

All 13 children were rescued alive and reunited with their families.

Five children were taken to a medical facility for evaluation, while one child had visible facial injuries that police attributed to the suspect. Authorities did not report any life-threatening injuries.

School administrators and teachers were also credited with helping prevent a larger tragedy by evacuating other students from the building during the emergency.

Investigators later identified the suspect and said they had received information that he suffered from schizophrenia. However, authorities have not established whether his reported mental health condition played any role in the incident.

Police also revealed that the man dropped a letter while entering the school. Staff members recovered the document and turned it over to investigators, but its contents have not been publicly disclosed.

The suspect’s name has not been released, and investigators have not established a motive or explained why he targeted the preschool.

Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel expressed relief over the children’s rescue and praised the emergency responders who brought the crisis to an end.

City officials also announced that psychological support would be made available to the children, their families, and school employees following the traumatic ordeal.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the invasion and the suspect’s actions before the deadly confrontation.
