Reality TV star Mackayla Paige, better known to fans as Kash, was shot and killed during a night out in downtown Oakland, California, just hours after sharing videos of herself enjoying the evening on social media. She was 29.
The shocking killing happened early Sunday, October 11, leaving her family, friends and fans devastated. Police have arrested a woman in connection with her death, but investigators have not revealed what sparked the deadly encounter.
According to the Oakland Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the 200 block of 14th Street, near Harrison Street.
When officers arrived, they found Paige suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Emergency responders attempted to save her life before she was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities confirmed that a woman from Richmond, California, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Her identity has not been released, and police have not disclosed what charges she may face or whether the two women knew each other.
Just hours before her death, Paige had shared Instagram Stories documenting her Saturday night out. The videos have taken on heartbreaking significance for fans mourning the young star.
Known for her outgoing personality and growing presence in reality television, Paige appeared on several shows associated with the streaming platform Now That’s TV, including Real West Coast Baddies, RoomH8z and Young & Reckless.
But television fame was only part of what she hoped to accomplish.
Her cousin, Nicky Clayton, told KTVU that Paige dreamed of building a successful entertainment career, launching her own business and working in modeling and makeup.
Clayton was among the grieving relatives who gathered near the shooting scene to create a memorial honoring Paige.
“I’m in disbelief,” Clayton told the station.
She explained that her cousin had recently been spending time with family, making the news of her violent death even harder to comprehend.
“She was chilling. She was with family. So she supposed to be good,” Clayton said, adding that she had no idea what happened before the shooting.
Friends also remembered Paige as someone who brought excitement wherever she went and constantly encouraged the people around her to pursue their goals.
One close friend, known as Poodahh, has the words “Spoil Me With Kash” tattooed on her hand in honor of their friendship.
Speaking to KTVU, she described Paige as someone who recognized her potential and pushed her to do better, even when she doubted herself.
Poodahh also recalled the countless adventures they shared, remembering how Paige’s infectious energy could turn almost any occasion into a memorable experience.
Overwhelmed by grief, she admitted that she could not bring herself to speak about her friend in the past tense.
“She’s not gone. I can’t speak to her in the past tense,” she said.
Now That’s TV also paid tribute to Paige, remembering her as part of its reality television family.
Meanwhile, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Videos circulating online reportedly show a heavy police presence near Cave Lounge, a nightlife establishment close to the intersection of 14th and Harrison streets. However, investigators have not confirmed whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the business.
Police have also not announced a motive. Any claims circulating on social media about what triggered the confrontation remain unverified.
The Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section is continuing its investigation. Detectives are seeking witness accounts, photographs and video footage that could help establish what happened in the moments before the shooting.
Anyone with information can contact the department’s homicide investigators at 510-238-3821 or its tip line at 510-238-7950.
For Paige’s loved ones, the loss is especially painful because of everything she had still hoped to achieve.
As friends gathered to remember the aspiring entertainer, Poodahh offered a tribute that captured just how much Paige meant to those closest to her.
“I’m sorry for all of our loss, because she’s a star.”
