15-Year-Old Girl Wakes Up Inside Coffin During Her Own Funeral (Video)

A grieving family in Guatemala was left stunned when their 15-year-old daughter suddenly opened her eyes and sat up inside her coffin during a wake, hours after her father believed she had died.

Yuleidy Ixcotoyac was being mourned by relatives and neighbors on Saturday, October 10, when her mother noticed something extraordinary. The teenager, who had collapsed earlier that morning, was moving inside the coffin.

The shocking moment unfolded in El Jocote, a rural village in the Quiché region of Guatemala, where mourners had gathered to say their final goodbyes.

Just hours earlier, Yuleidy had complained of severe chest pain before losing consciousness. Her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac Tojín, an evangelical pastor, rushed her toward a medical facility, hoping to get help.

During the drive, however, he became convinced his daughter had stopped breathing.

He pulled over and checked her wrists for a pulse but said he could not detect one. Believing she had died, he abandoned the trip to the hospital.

The devastated family obtained a coffin and brought Yuleidy home to prepare for her funeral. No doctor had examined the teenager or officially pronounced her dead.

By approximately 2:30 p.m., relatives and members of the community had gathered for the wake.

Yuleidy’s mother, Lesvia Ríos, was leaning over the coffin and crying when she noticed her daughter beginning to move.

“I kept saying she was alive; she wasn’t dead,” Lesvia recalled in comments reported by local media.

Within moments, the teenager opened her eyes and began sitting upright, turning a gathering filled with sorrow into one of disbelief and celebration.

Video of the extraordinary scene quickly spread across social media, showing family members helping Yuleidy out of the coffin and offering her water as stunned mourners surrounded her.

Speaking afterward, the teenager remembered experiencing intense pain in her chest before everything went dark.

“My heart started hurting really badly; it felt heavy and then I blacked out, like I fainted,” she explained.

Yuleidy and her deeply religious family described the experience as a miracle.

“I have no way to thank God for everything he has done in my life,” the teenager said.

Her father also acknowledged that Yuleidy never reached a hospital before the family began preparing her funeral. He said he had sincerely believed she was dead after failing to find signs of breathing or a heartbeat.

The family’s account has attracted international attention, but an important medical question remains unanswered: What caused Yuleidy to lose consciousness for so long?

Although reports suggest approximately eight hours passed between her apparent collapse and recovery, there is no medical evidence establishing that she was actually dead during that period.

Conditions that cause prolonged unconsciousness or make vital signs difficult to detect can sometimes be mistaken for death without a professional medical examination. However, no specific condition has been confirmed in Yuleidy’s case.

The distinction is especially important because recognizing a heartbeat or breathing can be difficult without medical training or equipment. A person who appears unresponsive may still be alive and in urgent need of treatment.

According to subsequent reports, Yuleidy was conscious and recovering at home, although she continued experiencing trembling in her hands.

As of October 12, no official medical findings had been made public explaining her collapse, and it remained unclear whether she had subsequently undergone a hospital examination.

For her family, however, what began as one of the worst days of their lives ended with something they never expected: their daughter alive and speaking to them again.

Editorial note: I kept the headline dramatic but avoided claiming Yuleidy was medically declared dead or resurrected. Local reporting confirms that her father believed she had died, but no physician verified her death. That distinction makes the article more accurate and better suited to AdSense-friendly news coverage.
