A 6-year-old Illinois girl was tragically killed after she was struck by a school bus near her family’s home Tuesday afternoon, leaving an entire community shaken.

Jenna Menias was hit around 3:24 p.m. on Sept. 8 in Frankfort, Illinois, according to local authorities.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a school bus had struck a young pedestrian. Witnesses and first responders immediately began CPR and other desperate life-saving measures.

Jenna was rushed to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. She later died from her injuries.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the little girl as 6-year-old Jenna Menias. She was reportedly walking near her family’s home when the horrific crash occurred.

Police have not released details explaining exactly how Jenna came to be struck or whether the bus driver could face any charges.

“This tragic incident has had a profound impact on those involved, their families, and our community,” the Frankfort Police Department said.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, loved ones, and all those impacted as they navigate this difficult time.”

Authorities also asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve.

Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 confirmed that the vehicle involved was one of its buses and that it had been transporting students from Frankfort School District 157-C.

Several children were still aboard the bus when Jenna was struck.

Emergency responders evaluated those students at the scene before they were reunited with their families.

Officials with Lincoln-Way said the district was cooperating fully with police as the investigation continued.

Frankfort School District 157-C, where Jenna was a student, said counselors and other support staff were being made available to children struggling with the devastating news.

“We know that an event of this nature deeply affects our entire school family,” the district said. “We encourage students who may be feeling worried or upset to reach out to a trusted adult, teacher, social worker, or other member of our school support team.”

Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle described the tragedy as “heartbreaking” and asked the community to pray for Jenna’s family, the witnesses who saw the crash and the first responders who desperately tried to save her.

The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.
