A packed air show in Greece turned into a horrifying scene Saturday when a fighter jet slammed into the ground and exploded in flames in front of thousands of stunned spectators.

Both pilots aboard the Greek Air Force F-4 Phantom were killed in the crash at Tanagra Air Force Base, north of Athens. No civilians were injured.

The two-seat fighter was performing a low-altitude maneuver during the annual Athens Flying Week when it suddenly plunged into the ground just meters above the runway area.

Video captured the terrifying moment the jet hit the ground and erupted into a massive fireball, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Another burst of flames could be seen nearby as pieces of the aircraft broke apart.

“We were all stunned. It hadn’t been airborne for more than three minutes,” one eyewitness told Greek state broadcaster ERT.

The fiery crash immediately triggered a huge emergency response.

Authorities deployed 85 firefighters along with 11 water-dropping airplanes and helicopters to battle the blaze.

The bodies of both pilots were later recovered from the wreckage.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the tragedy had sent shockwaves across the country.

“The sense of grief is widespread, and our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots we lost,” Mitsotakis said.

He added that the deadly crash was a reminder of the dangers faced every day by Greek military pilots who remain on constant alert to defend the country’s airspace.

Organizers immediately canceled the remainder of Athens Flying Week and evacuated the area following the crash.

Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas also offered condolences, saying he was deeply saddened by the deaths of the two Hellenic Air Force officers. Palmas said he contacted Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias after learning of the disaster.

The Greek Air Force declared three days of mourning for the fallen pilots.

Saturday’s tragedy comes just months after two aircraft collided during an air show in Idaho in May. In that incident, both pilots managed to eject safely before their planes crashed.
