A funeral in Utah turned into a scene of chaos Monday when gunfire erupted outside a church, leaving one man dead and two others critically wounded.

The deadly shooting unfolded outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Kearns, near Salt Lake City, at around 11:25 a.m., according to the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake.

Even more chilling, police said they had been warned before the funeral that there could be trouble.

Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal said people planning to attend the service contacted authorities earlier Monday and told them there was a chance “there could possibly be a problem.”

They asked police officers to be visible around the church while the funeral was taking place.

Those concerns quickly became reality.

Officers stationed at the church suddenly heard gunshots coming from the south side of the building and rushed toward the violence.

Police found one man lying in the road with critical injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers then spotted a second wounded man being carried toward a vehicle in the church parking lot.

Police ordered the people with him to stop, but the vehicle allegedly drove away, triggering a brief pursuit.

Officers eventually boxed the vehicle in nearby and got the wounded man medical attention. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

A third male shooting victim was also discovered at the church and rushed to a hospital with critical injuries.

“We believe that all the injuries were gunshot-related,” Hoyal said.

Investigators believe all three victims were shot outside the church rather than inside the building.

Police said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and there is no indication of a broader threat to the public.

However, investigators are looking into whether gang activity may have played a role in the deadly confrontation.

Detectives were interviewing numerous people who attended the funeral as they worked to determine exactly what sparked the gunfire. Investigators also hoped to speak with the surviving victims as their conditions allowed.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the surrounding community and prompted several schools in the Granite School District to briefly go into lockdown as a precaution.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the man who was killed or the two critically injured victims.

The investigation remains ongoing.
