Woman Jumps from Burning 11th-Floor Building in Shocking Video

A woman made a terrifying leap from the 11th floor of a burning apartment building after flames trapped her high above the streets of Berlin.

The heart-stopping drama unfolded early Friday morning after a fire erupted on a balcony of a 21-story residential tower in the German capital’s Friedrichshain neighborhood.

Video from the scene showed the woman clinging to the outside of a window roughly 115 feet above the ground while flames roared from a nearby apartment.

By the time firefighters arrived, she was still dangling from the building — but rescuers quickly ran into a frightening problem.

Their aerial platform could only reach the ninth floor.

With the flames closing in and no other way down, firefighters positioned a rescue basket below the woman and prepared for the unthinkable.

She would have to jump.

The basket was reportedly just about five feet wide, leaving almost no room for error.

In dramatic footage, the woman finally released her grip and plunged toward the firefighters below, landing safely in the rescue basket.

Bystanders watching from the street erupted in applause as crews brought her to safety.

“That was a real nail-biter,” a Berlin fire brigade spokesperson said, adding that firefighters don’t encounter rescues like it every day.

The blaze broke out at around 6:27 a.m. on the 11th-floor balcony of the building on Straße der Pariser Kommune.

More than 110 residents were evacuated as firefighters battled the flames and thick smoke.

At least 13 people were injured, most suffering from smoke inhalation. Five people were taken to the hospital.

Fire crews said 113 residents were evacuated from the building.

The damage was extensive.

Images from the scene showed the exterior of the 11th-floor apartment blackened by fire, with scorch marks stretching several floors higher. The inside of the 11th floor was also heavily damaged by smoke.

Authorities have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.

The surrounding section of Straße der Pariser Kommune was shut down while emergency crews worked at the scene.

In an eerie coincidence, another high-rise fire broke out at roughly the same time across Berlin in the Märkisches Viertel neighborhood of Reinickendorf.

Fire officials said that blaze began on the fifth floor of a 10-story apartment building before spreading to the sixth.

“The situation was similar, but not as dramatic,” the fire department said.

One person was hospitalized in that fire, while six of the building’s 96 apartments were left uninhabitable.

But it was the desperate 11th-floor escape in Friedrichshain that left witnesses stunned — with one woman forced to make a terrifying leap as flames raged just feet away.
