A night of music in downtown Lexington turned deadly Saturday when gunfire erupted at an outdoor concert, leaving one person dead and four others wounded — including two young children.

The shooting broke out around 6:45 p.m. at Charles Young Park, where an outdoor concert event was underway, according to local reports.

Police said five people were shot in total. One victim died, while four others — including two adults, a 14-year-old and a 4-year-old — were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The violence unfolded just over a mile from the Hyatt Regency, where Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was speaking at the Kentucky Democratic Party’s Moving Forward Together dinner.

Beshear interrupted his remarks to acknowledge the frightening situation developing nearby.

“Before I continue, I do need to let y’all know we do have some tough news tonight,” the governor told the crowd.

He said the shooting had happened after the dinner began and told attendees that five people had apparently been injured, with one person believed to have died.

The shooting sent shockwaves through Lexington as investigators descended on the park and worked to determine exactly what sparked the gunfire.

As of late Saturday night, Lexington police said the investigation remained active and that no additional details were immediately available.

Authorities had not publicly announced a suspect or motive.

Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers also issued a plea to the public, urging anyone who believes someone they know may be preparing to use a weapon to alert authorities before violence erupts.

“If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens,” Weathers said. “Please let us know.”

The Lexington bloodshed came during an especially violent Saturday in the U.S., with other shootings also reported in Michigan, Virginia and Chicago.

The investigation into the Kentucky shooting is ongoing.
