Hunter Biden has opened up about his father Joe Biden’s worsening cancer battle, revealing the former president is dealing with a disease that has become “very painful” and “very debilitating.”

The 56-year-old gave the emotional update during an August 7 interview, speaking candidly about what the Biden family has been watching behind closed doors.

Joe, 83, announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of stage 4 prostate cancer.

The cancer has since spread beyond the prostate and into his bones.

“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter told the BBC, according to The New York Post. “It’s very painful, and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”

Despite the serious diagnosis, Hunter said his father has continued trying to remain active and engaged.

“He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter said. “He so believes in this country.”

The former president has continued making occasional public appearances while undergoing treatment.

In late June, Biden appeared alongside Maryland Democrats at their “Fight Back and Win” gala near Baltimore. Earlier that month, he also attended the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

But behind those appearances, the Biden family has been dealing with a far more difficult reality.

Former first lady Jill Biden previously revealed that her husband’s cancer is something he will likely live with for the rest of his life.

“He’s doing okay,” Jill, 75, said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa.

She explained that while prostate cancer can sometimes be treated successfully, Joe’s case became more complicated after doctors discovered it had already spread.

“When we got out, he was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer,” Jill said.

She noted that some patients can undergo radiation or other treatments and eventually be considered cured.

“Unfortunately for Joe, it metastasized to his bones,” she said. “Which means that he will forever live with cancer.”

Jill said the diagnosis has turned into an ongoing battle involving regular testing, medication and constant monitoring by doctors.

“We have to be mindful of it every three months, testing and medicines,” she said.

The former first lady knows firsthand how exhausting cancer can be for an entire family. She referenced her late stepson Beau Biden, who died from brain cancer in 2015.

“Anybody who’s gone through this cancer journey — and I’ve been through it many times with members of my family, of course with Beau — it’s constant,” Jill said.

“It’s daily. And I think it’s challenging.”

Hunter has now offered an even more personal glimpse into how difficult his father’s condition has become.

“It’s really sad to watch,” he admitted.

He also suggested the former president may be downplaying just how much pain he is experiencing.

“The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good,” Hunter said.

For the Biden family, the former president’s cancer battle has clearly become a deeply personal fight — one Hunter says his father continues to face while refusing to slow down.
