A Texas construction worker died after falling down a deep shaft at a job site near Houston, and authorities are now investigating whether his deadly plunge may have been the result of a violent confrontation.

The incident happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday in Sheldon, a Houston suburb, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The 47-year-old worker, whose name was not immediately released, was found dead at the bottom of a shaft that was about 30 to 40 feet deep, authorities said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office told ABC Houston affiliate KTRK that the man had been involved in an altercation with a co-worker at the construction site before he fell.

Now, investigators are trying to determine whether the worker fell on his own or was pushed.

“It’s possible the man was pushed,” Gonzalez said in a statement on social media.

The Sheldon Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead.

Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters were seen gathered near the shaft as the investigation unfolded at the job site.

Harris County homicide detectives are now handling the case.

Investigators detained the man’s co-workers and were interviewing them about what happened before the fatal fall, Gonzalez said.

No arrests had been announced.
