At least 13 people were killed after a pickup truck carrying wedding guests was struck on a highway in Indonesia, sending more than a dozen people flying onto the road, authorities said.

The deadly crash happened Sunday, July 12, on the island of Java as the group was returning from a wedding.

Local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat told the Associated Press that the guests were riding in the open bed of a pickup truck when the driver slowed down to make a U-turn on the northern coastal highway near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency.

Moments later, a box truck traveling in the same direction slammed into the back of the pickup.

“The impact pushed the pickup into the opposite lane where it was hit again by another truck,” Hidayat said, according to the AP. “The powerful collision hurled more than a dozen people from the pickup truck onto the highway.”

Three people died at the scene, while 10 others died while being taken to the hospital, The Sunday Guardian reported, citing local media.

Five people survived the crash and were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious, police said.

Photos from the scene showed the badly damaged vehicles parked along the roadside in Indramayu on Monday, July 13, as police officers guarded the crash site.

The tragedy has raised fresh concerns in Indonesia about the dangers of using pickup trucks to carry passengers, especially in open beds with little protection.

Syaiful Huda, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, said the crash was a grim reminder that pickup trucks are not built to transport people.

“We all understand that pickup trucks are designed to transport goods, not people,” Huda said, according to local outlet Republika. “When a pickup truck is used to transport passengers, the risks are very high. If an accident occurs, the potential for loss of life is much greater because the vehicle is not designed to protect passengers.”

Huda said many people continue to use pickup trucks for transportation because it is cheaper, even though the safety risks can be devastating.

“Because of the low cost, our society often neglects safety factors, which are incredibly expensive. This situation must be a concern for all of us,” said Huda, who also serves as chairman of the PKB Central Executive Board.

He urged Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation to strengthen safety education and called on police to fully investigate what led to the crash.

Authorities said the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
