‘Indiana Jones’ Star Dies at 82

Michael Byrne, the veteran British actor known to millions for his roles in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, has died. He was 82.

The longtime screen and stage star passed away on June 20, according to The Guardian. His cause of death has not been revealed.

Byrne, who was born in London on Nov. 7, 1943, built a remarkable career that stretched nearly 60 years and included everything from Shakespearean theater to some of the biggest movie franchises in the world.

Long before he became a familiar face to Hollywood audiences, Byrne made his mark on the British stage. His first roles came in 1963 after he joined Laurence Olivier’s first National Theatre Company at the Old Vic in London.

From there, he appeared in major productions including Death and the Maiden, The Double Dealer, Much Ado About Nothing, The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull and Romeo and Juliet. Later in his career, he also starred in Mary Stuart at the Duke of York’s Theatre and Uncle Vanya at the Theatre Royal in Bath.

Byrne made his film debut in 1963’s The Scarlet Blade and went on to appear in Butley, The Eagle Has Landed, Henry VIII and His Six Wives, The Medusa Touch and The Good Father.

But for many movie fans, he will always be remembered as Nazi Colonel Ernst Vogel in the 1989 blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Starring opposite Harrison Ford, Byrne played one of the film’s most memorable villains in the beloved adventure classic.

His career did not slow down there.

Over the next two decades, Byrne appeared in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning Braveheart, the Pierce Brosnan James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York.

Then, in 2010, he joined another legendary franchise when he played dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

Three years later, Byrne appeared in Diana, the Naomi Watts-led film about Princess Diana, playing South African heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard.

Byrne also had a long television career, with appearances in The Living and the Dead, Midsomer Murders, American Rust, The Baby and Bodies. He also played Ted Page on the British soap Coronation Street from 2008 to 2010.

According to IMDb, Byrne’s final acting appearance came in a 2023 episode of the comedy-drama series The Phoebus Files.

After nearly six decades on stage and screen, Byrne leaves behind a legacy filled with villains, historical figures, prestige dramas and blockbuster moments that made him a familiar face across generations.
