Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee is now facing a murder indictment in the shocking death of his girlfriend — and prosecutors say the death penalty could still be on the table.
Lee, 31, was indicted Tuesday by a grand jury in Hamilton County, Tennessee, in connection with the death of his partner, 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo.
Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp said prosecutors dismissed a tampering with evidence charge so they could focus on the most serious accusation against the former football star: first-degree murder.
If convicted, Lee could face life in prison. Prosecutors are expected to decide in the coming weeks whether they will seek the death penalty.
Perpetuo was found dead in February inside a Tennessee home near Chattanooga. According to the medical examiner, she died from multiple blunt force injuries. Her autopsy reportedly listed 12 separate injuries, including multiple hematomas, bone fractures and stab wounds.
The case has only grown more disturbing as prosecutors revealed what they say happened after Perpetuo was injured.
Authorities claim Lee turned to ChatGPT and asked how to get medical help without calling police.
Prosecutors also alleged he asked the artificial intelligence tool whether a fall could cause bruising to both eyes and “two stabby looking wounds.” He allegedly asked about injuries that would be consistent with someone falling in the shower.
Bodycam footage from the scene reportedly showed Lee telling an officer that Perpetuo “may have slipped and fallen in the shower,” while also saying he did not know what had happened to her.
Lee remains jailed in Hamilton County without bond.
The grim details from inside the home were revealed during earlier court proceedings, where investigators described a bloody and chaotic scene.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Lockhart, one of the first investigators at the home, said there was “blood in just about every room.”
“The scene was in disarray,” Lockhart told the court.
He said Perpetuo was found on the floor lying on her back. Investigators said blood was discovered on the staircase, hand railing, walls, living room floor, hallway and even inside a car in the garage.
Perpetuo was reportedly found topless and had suffered horrific injuries, including severe brain trauma, a broken neck, bruising across her body and a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh. She also had stab wounds to her legs, according to the autopsy.
Investigators said the microwave inside the home had been shattered, while glass and alcohol bottles were scattered around the property. Detectives also found cleaning supplies upstairs, including bleach wipes and a spray bottle.
Lee reportedly called 911 from the home, located near Ooltewah Elementary School, about two and a half hours outside Nashville.
At the time of his arrest, Lee was already on probation in both Ohio and Florida after being charged in three separate alleged assaults involving another man, his mother and the mother of his child, according to court records.
Before his life spiraled into criminal accusations, Lee was once a standout football player with a promising future.
He helped Ohio State win a national championship in 2014 before being selected by the New York Jets with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Lee played 58 NFL games with the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills between 2016 and 2020. He recorded 241 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and four sacks during his time with New York before being traded to Kansas City.
He later had brief stints with Buffalo and the Las Vegas Raiders before being released in 2021.
Now, the former first-round draft pick is sitting behind bars as prosecutors prepare to pursue a first-degree murder case that could end with a life sentence — or possibly something even more severe.
