A terrifying scene unfolded in the Bronx on Wednesday afternoon when a school bus carrying 39 children became stuck in a massive sinkhole after the road suddenly gave way.
The shocking incident happened around 1:40 p.m. near East 180th Street as the bus was making a right turn. Moments later, the right rear wheel dropped into the gaping hole, leaving the bus badly tilted and unable to move.
Firefighters, EMS crews and police rushed to the scene as a precaution, while officers worked to control traffic around the blocked roadway.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Video from local news showed the yellow school bus leaning at a dramatic angle, with one wheel trapped deep inside the broken pavement. The school was reportedly only a few blocks away from where the roadway collapsed.
The Bronx scare came as New York has been dealing with a string of frightening sinkhole incidents across the area.
Just hours earlier, another sinkhole opened up at LaGuardia Airport, forcing officials to shut down a runway while emergency construction and engineering crews worked to figure out what caused the collapse and how to make the area safe again.
And over the weekend, a sinkhole on Long Island swallowed part of a white car and shut down several lanes of traffic. That hole was reportedly about 10 feet wide and 8 feet deep.
Horrifying video of the Long Island Expressway incident quickly spread online, showing a car partially submerged in the huge gap in the road. The airbags deployed, but incredibly, no one was hurt.
Driver Jeffrey Jimenez told News12 The Bronx that he hit the sinkhole and blew out both front tires, but escaped without a scratch.
“It’s scary,” he said. “I didn’t get hurt, thank God. I’ve never seen anything like that. That’s fatal. Someone could die from something like that.”
Jimenez said he tried to warn the driver behind him, but it was too late. That vehicle also ended up partially inside the hole.
Somehow, those occupants also walked away unharmed.
The Bronx school bus incident is now raising fresh concerns about road safety as sinkholes continue popping up across New York, causing chaos for drivers, travelers and now schoolchildren.
For parents, the image of a bus full of kids leaning into a collapsed street was enough to send chills down the spine.
This time, everyone made it out safely.
But after a week of roads and runways caving in across New York, many residents are wondering where the next sinkhole will open — and whether the next close call will be so lucky.
